Maybe not bogus, probably like many rescues. Good hearted people with NO knowledge what so ever!

I guess, but still, 30 lbs of food will kill just about anything.

I agree with BW, Id tell that lady to shove it. Just keep necessary vet papers in each reach near your horse in case she decides to "try" to get the horse back. I dont see how she can legally do that anyway, but thats besides the point.
30lbs of feed??? Is she insane???

I am sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your horse. Sounds alot like I went through with Moni...a tumor was a possibility on her list of problems. She lost all her weight and then her muscle. She looked like I was starving her. She was on a ton of food. So trust me, I know your frustration.

The statement about the ribs shows absolute ignorance on their part. Offer to have another vet examine her as well.

Have you considered feeding her 3 or even 4 times a day? Same amount of food, just split into more feedings. I completley understand if your schedule doesn't allow for it. It was recommended that I do that with Reno, but there was just no way.

Something jumped out at me about your mare----she's not cleaning up her hay. We have a 21 year old TB mare who is almost impossible to get fat----she looks like she's still on the track and she's semi-retired. She refuses her hay when her teeth are bothering her. Have you had your horse's teeth checked? If she's having trouble with her forage, that'll keep the weight off her. If her teeth check out, she has no gastric upsets, and its just a tumor, etc. causing it---try soaked hay cubes for a midday and a mid-evening meal. All the benefits of hay without the work to chew it. It works for Bay-sic(that plus lots of dental work, Pepto-Bismol, and No Southern States Feed)

She had her teeth done about 4 weeks ago. Last night she left almost all of her hay.

I'd like to be able to feed more often, but I am not sure I could work it into the schedule unless I fed the last feeding at 9pm.

Unfortunately, she will probably go back... Last night I sent them an e-mail saying that my Vet thinks 30lbs of grain a day is excessive and he believes that what I am doing is the best I can do considering her age and medical condition. I am going to continue to follow his recommendations, so if they insist that she needs 30lbs of grain a day, they need to take her back. The geldings love her and she loves them. I think she is happy with us and I wanted her to live her final days here, but the fact is she is not my horse... if they want to take her back they can. I hate to see her go back... throwing 30lbs of grain a day at her isn't going to change the fact that she has a tumor and other medical issues.

BW, we are not sure where the tumor is... the blood work that was done indicates the presence of one.

If they come and get her, TURN THEM INTO THE HS. Talk with the vet about it to about the "issues" on why the horse was picked back up and how detrimental to the horse's health on going back!

Dang, do you still have those e-mails? KEEP THEM. Print them out, and go see someone in the ASPCA. I BET you can keep that horse because ASPCA will rule that it IS NOT in the horses best interest! Print the E-mails, call the ASPCA near you and discuss your options at this point.

If you want, PM me with the ASPCA info nearest you, and e-mail me a copy of the letters. I can get you to the right people and see if anything can be done for ya.

I do still have all the e-mails. I am also planning on contacting Dr. Adams, the equine nutritionist at Southern States.

Should I contact the local SPCA or the local Equine Rescue?

I'm at work right now, so I'll have to wait until I get home to e-mail you those e-mails... I might have another when I get home too! Thanks again, BW!!

ok. my email is mlasiter@sbcglobal.net

Call both. If the other equine rescue isn't affiliate with the rescue you got this horse at, they may be able to step in and help you with this matter. Drop Dr Adams an e-mail as well. Inform him of the situation and if 30lbs of Grain is a Good Idea. He'll DROP DEAD when he reads it!! I called Dr Brown, our nutritionist here at my school, he LAUGHED so hard. Thought I was kidding! THen I told him about your horses. He's in SHOCK!
