I think what you're feeding her is fine. 30 pounds of grain a day would kill a horse. I agree, just ask your vet what the best thing would be. We have our older mare of Triple Crown Senior, and she's doing great on it. How much of it do you give her?

I agree with the others. Have the vet come out, and recommend the proper feed for her. This way if you have any problems with the adoption agency you will have something to back up the reasons for the feed you give her. They can't argue with that.

I just heard from my vet and he feels the same... he thinks what I am feeding her is adequate. He will be mailing me copies of her medical records and I will fax it to the adoption agency. In the meantime, I will e-mail the adoption place back, tell her that I am sending her medical records, tell her what my Vet recommends and that I am following his recommendations. If she still feels that the mare needs 30lbs of grain a day, she can come get her. arabianlvr87, She is getting the following: 5lbs Triple Crown Senior feed 2lbs Vitality 10 Sweet feed 3 cups beet pulp shreds soaked 1/2 lb Rice Bran 1 fluid ounce Red Cell 1/4 cup Veggie oil And, hay, of course as well as pasture. |

Thanks everyone for making me feel like I'm not being cruel to her.... after I heard from the adoption place I was so distraught that I might be causing my mare to be thin! Especially when she wrote (and I quote): 'If you can see her ribs she is starving to death'. The thought horrified me! It still does... When I noticed she was getting thin, I uped her feed and when she wasn't picking up weight, I called the vet. I'm so upset that I am being acused of being a "bad owner". |

Just because you can see her ribs by now means is she starving to death. My older mare has slight ribs showing, but she eats like a cow. Do you exercize your horse? They usually just cant hold the proper weight.

She has a bad knee, so she is just a pasture muffin. The thing that gets me is that I told the lady the mare wasn't eating all her hay. Now, I've seen horses that are starving (my Saddlebred was when we got him) and horses that are starving would be eating that hay like it was going out of style! They would be eating everything they could... leaves off the trees, vines, weeds... The first few months we had my Saddlebred he was getting lots of grain and hay and he would still eat everything he could... even wild grapes! He has a lot of white on his face and I could tell he had been in the wild grapes because he had purple stains on his white face! |

Well, with a tumor, it is VERY hard to keep weight on. Where was the tumor again?
