#3 - Do you think it's ok to Breed thread.

No, I'm not done yet, LOL.

#3 in the series.

Do you think it's ok to breed for completely "personal" reasons, rather then JUST for the betterment of the breed?

(I will give some parameters here This is NOT in the case of someone pumping out a number of foals each year out of anything that can breed. This is NOT someone wanting a "part of their horse" to live on. This is NOT someone who only handles the horses when they load them on the trailer to sell one. This is for someone that has researched/studied/and does more with their horses than just put foals on the ground, but their #1 consideration is NOT if it will "better the breed".)

Yay, another one

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that with the specifics you included in your post that yes, I personally think it is ok. I have thought about doing a breeding lease on Dakota when she's older (if the new owners say it's alright, of course). She is not absolutely STELLAR, but has a good pedigree, good conformation, excellent movement, temperment, and has the DRIVE that I love to see in my horses. No breeding would take place until she proved herself in some shows, but I feel that crossed on the right stud, she has all that it takes to produce a true all-arounder for me.

I don't think my situation would technically be to better the breed, although I'd definately aim to produce a foal that was better than both the mare and stallion. The stud would have to compliment her in every way, and then some. My goal would be to breed one heck of a reining horse for me to raise and show. So although I'd be breeding for a quality horse, I don't think it would necessarily set any new standards for the breed. And I think that as long as the MO has done thorough research, is educated in foaling, has picked a stallion to compliment their mare, and aims to produce a foal that would be marketable and desireable, I see no problem.

I am a little confused. If they are not breeding because they want a "part of their horse" but are putting a great deal of time and effort into finding the right match, yet they are not breeding to better the breed, what exactly are they breeding for?

No. because if everyone bred one for the own sake.. and something happens they move or end up finding its too much work and sell of anyways.. alot of people do it.

Thank you... I didn't understand it either. Maybe we're missing something...

I voted yes, because if a person truly takes time to research bloodlines, find a compatible match for their mare or stallion (I'll assume mare), and I'm guessing you mean training and hopefully showing with doing more with the foal than just putting it on the ground, then they will be bettering the breed.

To me, it's silly to even consider breeding if you don't want to get a foal that's a little bit better than the mare and stallion. That's the point of selectively breeding, to make the next generation better than the previous one. Again, if you're taking time to research your options and you're starting off with quality horses, then you're making that effort to improve. Why research if you're not trying to improve? Why research and settle on one that just kind of compliments your mare?

So I voted yes, but only because if the parameters you listed are not an effort at improving the breed, even on a microscale, then I think you need to also define option "No."

Sure.

As long as this person is doing the research and picking good, quality horses to breed... I do not care what their end goal is.

I'll be honest I really don't see the big deal about all these " do you think " threads. If someone wants to breed a horse for what ever reason then fine its no one elses business what they do or why. If their breaking a law then report it, if their not then theres not a **** thing anyone can do about it.
