2nd Foal Born! Dun or Grulla?!

Our 2nd foal was born! Out of a maiden mare but she went pretty textbook. Foaled at 336 days. Had wax all day yesterday starting acting like something was up at about 11 last night. Foaled at about 4 this morning. Cleaned perfectly, she's a wonderful mom, and mare and foal are doing great.
It's a dun or grulla colt!

We've had two dun foals born before and he doesn't look like either of them. We've never had a grulla before- so I'm not entirely sure what they do/can look like. He definately has dun factor- strong dorsal stripe, shoulder barring, face mask, and cobbwebbing on his forehead and ears.

The mare is a buckskin (who is homozygous black). The sire is a dun (who is heterozygous black). So this guy has a 50% chance of being homozygous black and also has a chance of carrying a cream gene due to the mare being a buckskin.

This colt is sired by Holidoc (earner of $120,000 +....$90,000 of that in the NCHA)- as is our other '07 bay colt. I must say I am VERY pleased with the Holidoc foals. They have awesome bone, muscle, and personality. Both colts love people and have great minds.

This colt will paid up for AQHA Incentive fund. And he will be for sale! (Will be priced in the next couple of days).

So, what do you think......DUN or GRULLA?

These pictures were taken at les than 2 hours old.

Hold on one minute while I load the pictures of his head. They really show the dark masking on his face.

Aw he is precious! Congrats

I don't think he's grullo...possibly a dunskin?

Do you know if the mare is AA or Aa?
I would say dun...but I know that grullo can look way different at birth compared to when they shed out. Beautiful baby whatever the color! Congratulations!!!

I wouldn't vote for grulla either, but foal colors can be a little tricky sometimes.

My vote is for dun or dunskin.

The mare has been UC Davis tested.... EE Aa N/Cr

The stallion has not been tested. However, he has 1 red based parent and one black based parent. So we know he is Ee.
He has also produced grullas...so we know he is Aa.
And we are assuming he carries no cream as one parent is sorrel and the other is dun- and he looks like a normal dun (not a dun + cream).

Here are some other pictures of Raider (the new colt)...

He's either dun or dunskin. Definitely has dun in there. A dna test would tell you if he's also cream, and would tell you if he was bay dun or grulla.

*BaRrEL_BaBE*:
No white hairs covering his body. (He's a QH and there is no roan, etc) The only white he has is the rear left pastern and he has a star.

JBandRio:
Yeah...looks like we are going to have to be testing him- for agouti and cream!

I say dunskin definately. He's too light to be a grulla, but you never know with these little things, sometimes they shed out darker.
