23 Horses Seized from South Carolina Farm

One day after seizing 23 allegedly malnourished horses from an Eastover, S.C., pasture, investigators with the Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA) were compiling paperwork to seek legal ownership of the horses.
"We haven't got a court date yet," said Kelly Graham, director of public relations for HSPCA in Columbia, S.C. "But we're working on it."
According to Graham, the HSPCA's probe into the horses' circumstances stemmed from telephone tips. Investigators found that the Arabian horses, ranging in age from foals to senior horses, were in poor body condition and showed other signs of neglect. Graham said the animals were residing in a field with no forage or remnants of hay and a single 15-gallon trough of water.
"We searched the entire property and not one bag of feed was found," she said. "The worst horse was a 1 on the Henneke chart."
On Feb. 25 investigators acted on a court order to remove the horses. The animals were relocated to stables at a veterinary clinic in Hopkins, S.C. Graham said no charges have been filed against the horses' owner. According to Graham, the horses will be placed with qualified new owners if the HSPCA is awarded ownership.
