Angry 2 Abscess In One Hoof!!!

Well we finally found out why Johnny was so lame. We had the vet come out and take x-rays to make sure he wasn't foundering and we found out he had an abscess in his hoof. We soaked it and it blew out in his coronary band. The next day while looking at it I also found an abscess that had not yet blown out in his heel on the bulb on the same exact hoof. That one too has blown out. They are all drained and they look good and he has almost no limp now, but I was wondering if there was anything I can do to keep them clean and healthy. I have been spraying them with iodine and putting this other stuff on it (forgot the name sorry) it's yellow almost like swat, but stickier. Should that be ok or should I wrap his hoof up or something? Thanks in advance for the help!

Furazone perhaps? (The sticky yellow stuff.)

Is he in a stall or turned out?

Yes that is it aha. He has 24/7 access to his pasture and his stall, so I would say he is turned out. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, but I don't want it to get infected or anything.

I would not use furazone. It's been shown to slow healing, promote proud flesh, and it's carcinogenic. I won't even own the stuff, no use for it.

I would have a bandage over it to keep dirt from getting down into the open wounds. You can take a cotton ball and soak it in diluted betadine. Stuff that down into the open holes as far as possible. If you can really get the cotton ball in there and the conditions are dry, you might not need the bandage.

Just thinking... The yellow sticky stuff... Did it come in a red and yellow container? If it did, it's Corona. I put that on wounds and I would think it would be fine.

Corona's white. (Well unless it gets dirty!)

Oh thanks for telling me that I will stop using it. The conditions are pretty dry right now, but Florida is unpredictable so I will stuff the cotton balls into it and put a bandage over it.

Well, that's certainly interesting

Maybe we should have a poll....

Don't get me wrong, it's not lilly flower white or anything. But I've never had any that was 'yellow'.
