On a serious note - have to agree on the furazone... its not on my list of good ointments anymore... a vet once told me that it often initiates proud flesh especially for some reason when its used on legs... Im not sure why or if its true - but I have to say that since I have stopped using it I barely ever deal with proud flesh. Its a good thing the abcessed have now burst - you probably noticed a HUGE difference in a short while on how much pain he was exhibiting. My old gelding had one once and I thought he had a broken hip or somehting cause he was THAT lame!!!! I poulticed the hoof and did betadine soaks. Was better in days. |

Yep, I just went thru the same thing. Did warm betadine/epsom salt soaks, dried the hoof then added a little betadine to the abcess area, a sheet of animalintex pad (get it from the vet) and wrapped the foot up. Someone posted something very helpful on here a while ago. After you soak and poultice, wrap the foot with vet wrap, take a strip of good quality duct tape and stick it acrpss the leg of your jeans. Then add another over lapping the edge and then add one more. Then do the same thing with three strips perpendicular to the other 3. Then take the whole lot off your leg and stick it to the vet wrap on the the bottom of foot. Wrap some more duct tape around the hoof to secure everything and voila!! It works very well!! |

Just went through this. Not a good idea to lock them up as movement helps the abscess progress. We soaked and used ichthamol to draw out the abscess. We smeared it on then put a diaper on the foot, then vet wrap, then duct tape. Once the abscess blows, you can use a weak betadine solution, but still wrap with a diaper, vet wrap, and duct tape. There's a nice web page on wrapping a hoof here (particularly in terms of how to "set up" the duct tape to be used): http://knol.google.com/k/linda-eskin...8ews919yzad/4# |

I have noticed a HUGE difference aha like right after the first abscess had blown you could tell he felt better. He was still really lame, but we now know that was because of the second abscess that blew. The last time I saw him which was a couple days ago he barely had a limp, so he's probably back to normal now. I have another question though since it has been forever since I have ridden him and could I ride him maybe tomorrow since it will be about 3 days without limping? Or should I wait until like Tuesday or something?

Ya we found that out the hard way because we kept him stalled thinking he had pulled a tendon or something and we put him on bute. After the vet came out and said it was an abscess we couldn't figure out why it hadn't even showed up yet much less blown and it was because we had him on bute. The vet said that since it's an anti inflamatory it was keeping the abscess in. So we took him off bute right away and soaked him and then sure enough the next day there was the abscess.
