Post 1yo and 7month colt broke already!!

ok, theres this grl who got a pinto foal a year ago and hes only 1 year and 7 months. and she's already saddle broke him and everything!!!! i was tlakin to her on AIM and it took every bit og me to not rant at her about training the horse too young. and shes already gonna show him this spring!! he does walk, trot, canter, poles, and goes over bridges. but i mean this horse is just over 1 1/2 years old!! he should still be working on ground manners and being a horse! not being ridden! the grl says that hes already big and she doesnt weigh that much, but a saddle is pretty heavy!! i couldnt beleive it!!! i feel so bad for the colt!! and i'm still fuming about it!!!! flaming_ flaming_ flaming_ flaming_

I agree with you, but in some cases where he is only ridden once a week so his back and legs are damaged, maybe acceptable in some cases, I know thourobreds are raced at two years old so there training can start early. A saddle only on the back will not cause any damage alot of people start there horses with just a saddle before breaking so the horse is use to the saddle.

Actually a saddle can be heavy enough to cause damage. Plus the fact that if he's broke enough to do all those things and she's getting ready to show him, I guarentee you she's riding him more than once a week.

And it's not just the extra weight. It's the movements we ask them to make. He's doing poles, that type of turning stress does not need to be put on those young knees or back.

she rides him every day and i dont get y she is in such a rush. another reason u she rides him already is cuz he's 14.2hh. thats not a good enough reason! hes still baby! i told my mom that if i ever tried to mount my foal(when i get one)she would have to punsh me somehow. but then she told me she couldnt see me doing that. but the big issue is he's just a yearling. he should still be in a pasture running around w/ sum buddies and just working on ground manners. there's this grl who boards at the barn i do and i work w/her and she's a really nice person and is great w/ horses. she recently got a 2 1/2 year old saddlebred and she just started putting a sircingle cinch on him so he can get used to pressure before she puts anything else on him. she does this for about 10-15 minutes everyother day, if that. and hse'd put a bit in his mouth so she can have better control of him when she starts mounting in a year or so. i'm horrified for the yearling pinto that he'll be damaged so much he wont be able to be ridden after 10 years old or something. i wish there was something i could do to help him!

That's a colour not a breed. Is he a mix? or a warmblood, or stock horse

Hmmp....that makes me angry just reading that. Im not sure I could deal w/ that person...Id explode all over them! There is NO reason for her to be starting this horse at such a young age! We have a 14.1-14.2 1 yr and 7 month old gelding and we arent even thinking about starting him until he is at least a little over 2 yrs.(We are planning on breaking him after he turns 2yrs old because of his size, conformation, possibility of ability and a few other things) Just because he is big now....doesnt mean his bones are ready for all that weight on his back! ARRRGGGGG!!! flaming_ flaming_ flaming_ flaming_ WOW!!! that makes me SOOO angry! I dont know this person...but it sounds liek to me that she makes stupid decisions with her horse(s). She is looking at what SHE wants out of him and not what HE needs. This is very unsafe and shouldnt be done. Hes still just a baby, 14+ hands or not! Ohh, well. And yes i think that you can hurt a horse w/ too heavy of a saddle. Their backs arent able to take so much weight at a young age.

If he's a pinto quarter horse, he's a paint. Pinto is a colour, and a paint is a breed. But a paint has to be a qh or a tb. Reason I was asking is if he wasn't a stock breed (which is what I thought since you said pinto) that that was really dangerous for her to have started him that early. Do you know when she started him? I mean, if he can already do all that, he's had to be under saddle for awhile.
