18 horses seized in Fayette Co, IA**GOOD NEWS**Post#13

Authorities took 18 horses and a pot bellied pig from a place near New Hampton, IA Sunday ... there was also three dead horses on the place. The owner was arrested (YAY!! ) and charged with livestock neglect and for driving while banned, it said. News link: http://www.gazetteonline.com/apps/pb...6970/1001/NEWS
(Nasty photo on there of a dead horse.)

So glad that the 18 horses will be receiving some good care now. Wonder what rescue is taking them in??? Perhaps there will be news on that later.

Anyone from up that way that knows more?

I am writing to a friend of mine that lives in Iowa, to see if she has heard anything about these animals and what is happening with them all. It is sad to see a horse laying in manure like that, looks like the area hasn't been cleaned in months. As for the chewing on the trees, that could simply be bordom (not saying it is, just could be). My horses will get bored and chew on the mulberry trees (only these trees get picked on too) in the pasture and they have plenty of free choice hay and mineral/salt licks. They are all in good weight and seem to be of sound mind, although you can never tell sometimes, LOL.

Yeah, I was kinda suprised that they used the tree chewing as the 'clincher' to the neglect. My girls chew on EVERYTHING .. brats! They are out in a pasture and are fed and hayed twice daily.. Fat and sassy... but not worked near enough

I think the dead horses is the clincher ..

Yes, I was amused that the reporter thought the chewed trees were so telling, ha....my boys must be absolutely starving, if that is the criteria. They have absolutely stripped a willow tree in the pasture, and also like to bite sticks off it and chase each other with the stick. Goofballs.

I haven't heard anything new this morning, except some footage on the news showing a few of the live horses. They didn't look AWFUL...I have seen worse, so we can be glad that someone intervened before any more died and before the others got down to protruding bones. Still awful.

Did you see the wagon they ate?? All that was left was the running gear! They looked like they were really in sad shape. Glad they're getting the food and care they need now. Too bad he couldn't find them homes before it got so bad.

Yep, the wagon looked like a cartoon I used to see as a kid where the termites would eat a house in 2 seconds, & only the chimney is left standing. Ha.

I wish they would keep it in the news more....I'd like to know how the horses are doing, and if they need homes.

Then I'll ask him, "uh, when we pass horse stables, do you ever see trees in the paddocks.....hmmmmm? lol.... "

If the guy had had a bale out there for them, it'd be different. But there was nothing but the trees, the feed bunk and the wagon for them to eat. I highly doubt that they had any hay all winter the way they looked. They were a lot of ribs showing and hips protruding from what I saw on the news.
