17 year old Mare

Okay. My mare is 17 years old, and in great condition! I ride her oh say 5 times a week, and a good work out each ride. She's in great physical condition and shape, and good health as well! Because of her age, is there any reason I should worry about her just...keeling over one day? I know with humans, people can die in there 60's or in their 100's! So is there any reason she should die of her age? She was off the track, and used as a broodmare for a while.

I wouldnt say there'd be any reason to worry about her keeling over unless she has a medical condition you dont know about... but I wouldnt worry about it if she's in good health

17 yrs is not old. If she is in great physial condition then there is no need to worry at all. She's got years and years left in her.

The only thing I would keep watch for is joint issues. Being ott that can cause some things to develop as they age. Not always though.

I agree with MissB- 17 is not old at all--my first horse was purchased at 17 and lived to be 33. One of the best things you are doing is riding--exercise will keep her in condition, happy, and healthy for many years to come. Enjoy your horse! She sounds like a gem.

my mare is 21 had a life probably about as hard or harder than your mare and is still going strong... my vet estimates that as long as she stays this healthy she should easily last into her 30's. (providing she doesnt get injured and have to be put down, or get really sick)

With good care horses can live a long time.
The oldest that I know of is 37.
My daugther has an arab that now 30.
We call this little arab -The pest, his real name is Little Guy,but he thinks and acts like he's is a big guy.
He herd my 2 TB and he is good at his job and love to play all of the time.

Miss Yo-Yo isn't going to keel over! Don't fret, dear. She's still as lively as ever... when I turned Secret out tonight Yoyo was threatening to kill Blue if Blue touched her food.

I also agree with miss b. 17 years old is not old. There are horses that lives up to 30 and 35..if there taking care of really good. I have a 22 year old mare..who was used for a brood mare also. I actually rescued her from being starved todeath. But she is gettin in better shape now! SO good luck with ur horse
