Bless her heart! My 3yr old was running through the store today. I called for her to stop running, she tells me over her shoulder...

"I'm not running, I'm TROTTING." [Hah]

It was all I could do to stop from bursting with laughter. Needed that today.

She's a real doll. I'm looking for excuses lately to get that pony a little earlier than we planned...

Hey MB, it only gets better too!!! My daughter, who is now 9 started when she was about 4. Clucking to me, telling me to *pick up my pace*, then she graduated to taking my saddle and putting it on the arm of the couch to watch tv, while practicing her riding skills!! She has tried to lunge the dogs before, bless their hearts. She had our Golden, Cody, going over pvc pipes, jumping. Just wait until your lil one starts using all the household band-aids/toilet paper as leg wraps for her model horses!!! [Hah] I do get a kick out of it still though!!! I let my daughter clip her own pony for the first time the other day, wow, she was pretty good too. Only a few *oopsie's*!!! [Hah] Thank God for forgiving ponies!!! [Big Grin]

LOL Huntseat [Smile] Yes, we are getting Sarah a pony... but not right at this moment. She's only 3 and I thought I'd wait until she's 5, but it's getting harder and harder to wait that long. Especially when she recently wished on a star for "A white, spotted pony, in my front yard".

We'll deffinitely be looking at a POA.

How cute Spy! LOL! I know, I just love it. Makes my heart swell! Sarah had all her model horses lined up in the living room yesterday and pronounced she was having a horse show in Paris. LOL! Where did THAT come from?

Oh that is priceless!!! Lean got Katie pony when she was almost 7. I firmly beleive that they should be old enough to help with chores revolving around the pony. She will muck stalls, clean paddocks, scrub water buckets, groom her, bath her, everything that needs to be done, she was taught and can now do by herself. (with minimal griping...LOL) She even recently saddled her by herself. She normally rides bareback, but wanted to ride in a saddle, I showed her how to cinch it 2 times and wah lah, she has it down pat now. She even puts Katie's meds in her eye when it flares up. (with my supervision). Pony's are great reward for lil girls, but they have to be willing to work for them and appreciate them IMO. [Big Grin]

I agree, that's why we don't have a little guy plunked out back right now. It would be easy for us to do, but how much would she appreciate that? Probably not a whole lot. Every once and awhile I get swept up in the excitement of thinking about it. But we are really set on waiting it out until she is old enough to appreciate the pony and yes, do chores. Too bad our 13old son is not at all interested... [Frown]

Where I do agree the kids should help with the responsibilty of owning a horse. I disagree with your age. My kids of course can't actually clean the stall but they sure do try. My kids love Dutchess and Ian has had her since he was two years old and Mary her whole life. THey know they have to help groom her before and after they go for a ride. They are able to help water, but not feed. The flakes are too heavy. BUt I don't think they take her for granit either. As they are growing up they are learning the responsiblity of owning her. I think it is good for them to have her at their age. (I agree to disagree)

I typed all this up and looked at their faces in this picture, Must have been a grumpy day!!LOL

No turm oil. Just decide if you want her to grow up learning the responsiblity or if you want her to learn it first. I personally think it is good for them, the younger the better!!

I should add with the RIGHT horse/pony. They have to be trustworthy enough for the young ones to learn with.

aww, i like the idea of pony since little, but im young, so i have a biased opinion, lol...we have ahsetland welsh pony that is the sweetest thing ever, until you are over the age of 8, lol, but we all grew up learning on her, to ride, clean stalls, groom, tack up, all that stuff, and if my grandma found we hadnt done something for her that we should of, we got in quite a bit of trouble! lol

OMG Well I already knew I would be getting the kids a pony in a few months but now I am chomping at the bit. I still havent decided if each kid gets one horse or if they all share a horse... POA or Quarter pony are the two I am leaning towards atm. I think for now I will get one horse for the three of them then when we buy a place with land they can havemore [Razz]

I would get what ever kind of pony/horse that you can find that is siutable for children. They are so hard to find, whether it be a tiny pony or a draft. They have to be bomb proof. I haven't seen to many ponies that are. We just happen to be at the risght place at the right time for Dutchess. She came from a ranch for disabled children. She hopped the fence into the pasture with a stud and had a foal. SHe turned out to be "wasting" money because they couldn't use her with a foal on herside. and they didn't want to feed her for 6 months with out using her. I think that was the STUPIDEST thing they could have ever done. She is the best pony EVER. The kids can do anything and she doesn't budge.
