harold no longer likes going in his stall! he jumps at the chance to go out, and is happy to stay otu till the bugs start goin at him despite fly spray, then he whinnies for me, and i go get him, and walk him aroun a bit, and refly spray him, but when i try to put him in his stall, he locks his legs and wont go..the only way i CAN get him in, is if i walk with a handful of grass..is that ok?

i dont like to bribe but like this one timne, one of our borders was spending 8 hours of the day trying to get her horse in the trailer it took her 4 days, by that time i would not be over bribing, but i wouldnt do it on every ocation, i told her get the horse moved and then work with it! i would say at times bribeing can be good but its really never good for a horses training, i only do it when i am desprite, like when we had to take one of my horses to the vet and she would not get in the trailer no matter what! so the vet told us to bribe her to get in, because she just wouldnt but then i went home and worked with her untill she went in. so my point is if you want to bribe only do it oif your really really desprite, dont do it all the time because then the horse will not do anything with out something in return like food. but thats my 2 cents.

question... once you get him in the stall, does he get angry, paw, kick, or just stand there?

Hmmm.. horse books say to just keeping marching forward and sooner or later the horse will take a step towards you since you seem to be going in a direction with no "scary things"

There is a post somewhere on horse trailering that I gave detailed info on forward movement. I will look for it and bump it up!!

i don't always believe in bribing , but i do it some of the time! see, my horse wont go in the trailer. it isn't scary for him, he is just used to a stock trailer so a smaller one is different. he is a ****** for food though and we just shake a little grain and it makes the process so much eaiser. we always try without it first but, letting him get on it without a big fight or scene makes him think that nothing is wrong with the trailer. he never puts up a fight and everytime he gets so much better,(further in without food)last time we trailerd i didn't even shake grain just gave him a treat when he was locked in! bribing isn't that bad. my parents did it to me just to get some stuff over with and it worked and now they don't have to brib me. i did it once and now it is no prob. to do it again.

I think bribing a horse is fine. When my horse just refuses to do something, I'll bribe him with treats and he'll do it. But I'll bribe him less and less with treats until he'll do it on his own. I think bribing is very helpful in a lot of cases but I think people don't like it because it can get out of hand. The horse can start to get grabby and thats never good.

I dont think bribing is good because that shows you (the owner, the boss) being submissive to the horse when it should be the other way around from the start.
