I am not sure what to do. My mare has always been this way she is easy to ride and very loving and gentel but she doesnt like to lope or even jog she just likes to hang out and go on trail rides. She does however like cows, but I dont have cows on my ranch so when I ride she is bored. It is becomming hard to decide what to do with her I am attached and I love her raised her since a baby I broke her, but with one baby on the groung from my other mare and another on the way I am running out of room. I dont think I can sell her and I dont want to because I know I can put anyone on her and they will be fine. I need her to be motivated and want to go. I cant just let her sit in the barn and waist away. But when I ride I would rather ride something else. She had a year and a half break and I hoped on her today no warm up and she was just fine just the same no motivation. She is eight so age is no matter but please help me find something I can do to help her injoy our rides.

Have you tried doing some games with her? Maybe she would like to do barrels. You could start out walking the pattern and then move up to a trot and a lope. As long as you don't drill the pattern into her she might enjoy doing it. Change the pattern and go to the right first and then when you do it the next time go to the left barrel first. Sometimes when a horse learns and knows the pattern they want to do it fast and it's fun for them. Another thing you could do is set up the pattern twice, one on either end of the arena so that when you finish one you can go on to the next, I don't know if I explained it clearly enough though. Maybe I can illustrate it

kind of like that, it might show up weird when i post. Anyway, I had a horse that really enjoyed doing the pattern for fun, not just to go at highspeeds, but at any speed. Good luck with your horse, hope this helps a little.
Ok the pattern showed up weird and I don't know how to fix it, but you get the basic idea I hope ![[Smile]](smile.gif) [ May 17, 2004, 09:02 AM: Message edited by: gallop3337 ]

Maybe try driving with her, a lot of bored horses enjoy the freedom of driving. It allows them to move forward at a more natural way without having to balance a rider, and they just seem to relax a lot better. Also, maybe try jumping or dressage, try to give the horse a more of a variety, I personally believe a lot of horses behavior problems come from boredom. They get pigeon holed into one sport and they get bored with it quickly. Never do the same thing two days in a row, and just do a variety let her guess whats going on.

She just hates dry work. She hasnt ever liked to do anything in an arena besides chase cows. She is not into the barrel or driving thig I have tried both. She is a great trail horse she loves to go and do things outside of the arena. That just doesnt help me when I want to give someone a lesson on her or just let them ride her. My girl is just not into doing anything to strenuous. I think she is lazy lol.
