Just wondering if anyone plays polo here? I'm beginning to think I'm the only one. It doesn't seem like a very popular sport... but I guess that's because you need a lot of horses and a lot of people (And practice) Or has anyone at least seen a polo match?

Yes,I have watched several Polo matches in my day! We also have been known to start up a mean game of "broomstick" polo with other horsey friends for an hour or two of good fun! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Not true! My polo instructor uses mostly Throughbreds off the track and those are huge horses.
Your grandfather used to own polo ponies? Wow! Lucky girl.
I think if you want to play you should check with the U.S Polo Association about classes. It's so much fun and it help your balance tremendously ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Now days most Polo "Ponies" are of TB or TB Cross breeding and are in the 15 hand range more or less. quote: The term polo pony is a misnomer and dates back to the days when polo was played on horses below the height of 13 hands. (one hand is 10 cms) This restriction was lifted in 1908 but the term has stuck. A good polo pony should be well bred, posses the docility of a lamb, the swiftness of a show jumper, the speed of a race horse and the endurance of an Arab steed! No horse on earth is born with these attributes, they have to be trained to acquire these contradictory virtues and that takes a lot of efforts.
Polo has become extremely fast today. Nothing could be more frustrating then to be on a slow horse on a polo field and watch others zip past you. Though half-breeds have better temperaments, more and more players are opting to play on thoroughbreds because of their speed.

My TB mare, Nellie (just sold her 2 weeks ago)..was a polo pony. I bought her off the farm and it looks like a lot of fun. When I tried her out, I got to ride on their practice field...the nicest, flattest, perfectest grass field I could have ever dreamed of riding on.

Usually, polo hemlets have face guards on them so I wouldn't worry too much. (The look like safari hats in my opinions XD)
It's not hard if you practice! If you have a taller horse all you need is a longer mallet. The stick is a polo mallet and horses get hit with the plastic balls a lot. But they're like mini inflatable soccer balls so it doesn't hurt. Usually polo ponies are very bomb-proof [ April 17, 2004, 06:48 PM: Message edited by: Nocturno ]

My mare had a lot of scars on her legs..I'm guessing that was from being hit with the ball..or not?

Are there a lot of accidents or is it relativly safe? (as safe as riding can be, anyway!)

No, you fall off a lot when you start but people rarely get injured because there's a certain rule that pervents horses from running into each other (The lane rule?)
Yes I think those might be scars from a bad polo player. This is where polo wraps come in. My guess is that the old owner didn't use them and so she got wacked a bit. However I don't think it's the balls that hit her because most people use soft inflatable soccer balls and wooden ones are only used on grass playing. It was probably the mallet. But your horses legs will be safe as long as you use wraps and maybe splints [ April 17, 2004, 07:02 PM: Message edited by: Nocturno ]

Awh..my poor mare! I don't think they used her much in real matches..they said she wasn't agressive enough on the field so I think she was more of a back-up.

Well polo ponies work in chukkers. A chukker is usually 7 minutes of play time and constitutes one round. Polo players have to change horses every chukker because theor horses get tired really fast (Well they're running for all or most of that 7 minutes) But I agree. What a sucky player her old owner must've been

Whoo! I LOVE POLO! I go to Las Colinas to watch whenever I can. My friend played for Tech and tried to teach me, Kayle didn't mind the swinging but I sure couldn't hit the ball. Then again her mallet was super short....and Kayle is 16hh. But how fun! I'd like to take some lessons from LCPC soon...don't know when though.
