Ok I went to a schooling show today just down the road. I was gonna go in 3'/3'3"...cuz it didn't go any higher. So I'm standing there waiting for about 3 hours..finally my class is one away so i went to go warm up. Sunny was acting wierd..idk if it was just the footing of the ring or what, but her hind-end came out from under her a few times. Then I started jumping and she was sluggish and I couldn't find my pace. I tried everything but I couldn't find out perfect pace...ever time I got a bad spot to the jump. Anyways after a while I lost my temper cuz I couldn't figure it out and Sunny was pi.ssing me off. So I decided to go home before I would do something I'd regrett. My family was pissed off, they had been waiting 3 hours for nothing. I think it was better for me to go home though, rather then go in the classes with a bad temper. So I trotted and cantered home, and immediatly went into my ring to school around. I still couldn't figure out my pace..I don't know what our problem is. I ran around jumping all the jumps and not one did I get a good distance to..and I tried every single pace. What is our problem? I feel so horrible now for wasting everyone's day and not ever going in the stupid show. And I feel ever worse for being mean to Sunny. Gah...I wish I could do this whole day over again.. omg zorse, i totally know how it feels to have a day like that - it's just an off moment, happens to all of us! we'd be lying if we didn't admit it. don't worry. you did a good thing by not trying to compete while you were upset and you two weren't on the same page. it takes a lot of maturity as a horseperson to make a decision like that, even if it makes a few people grumble because of inconvenience! [Big Grin]
maybe just spend some time bonding with her tonight...amble around bareback or just hand graze her. i promise it'll be ok tomorrow!

No..I don't really get nervous at shows. I don't know what our problem is lately..last time I jumped was on Monday, and it was the same story...we couldn't get any of our distances. I don't know if it's me riding her bad...if she's sore..or if it's both of us not getting along [Bawling] I feel even worse though, cuz my sis is here visiting. I made her sit at the show grounds the whole time, and now she's pissed that I was mean to Sunny.
See babs...everyone has horrible times when training young horses.

Celtic: I Just went out to apologize to her a couple min ago. I didn't really cool her out after I schooled her in my ring..I was in WAY too of a bad mood to stand grooming her. So I just went out to say sorry, and I took her for a walk down the road..both to cool her off and to say I was sorry. I feel so bad though..I used to have a bad temper when riding her...but I haven't lost my temper since last summer on her...I feel like a failure [Frown]

Don't stress too much about it zorse, it might make it worse worrying about it. It's probably an off day or week. **** I've had a few off months! I get pretty angry about it of course, but worrying about tomorrow can ruin your now. So just try and relax. If you haven't had any real problems since summer than that's great! I haven't gone that long without some kind of problem. It sounds like you and Sunny are really compatible and have made leaps and bounds together(literally lol). It will pass. [Wink]

Thanks guys..you made me feel a lot better. [Cute Kiss]

I went down and sat on her while she grazed in the field for about 2 hours...mending our broken relationship and just spending time with her. It's amazing how much thinking can be done on the back of a horse, and how much you can teach yourself while just sitting there.

Sunny's such a darling, forgiving horse...I take it for granted sometimes...and I wonder if I should be blessed with such an awesome little mare...I hope she knows I love her dearly.

I'm really sorry you had a bad day, but this is NO EXCUSE to mistreat your horse. Cooling a horse out properly is a very essential basic to horse health. Suck it up and treat your horse as he deserves to be treated.

And you did not need to go around jumping everything you could trying to "find your pace." When everything fails, you go back to the point when it didn't fail. If jumping fails, then you go back to flatwork. If you work on the flat for several days, then so be it.

I have a feeling you exhausted your horse today because he worked him on the showgrounds and then you trotted/cantered him all the way home instead of trailering him and then you jumped him too much at home.

If you can't get control of your temper, then maybe you should find someone to work your horse for you when you get this angry. Or else, just don't work the horse at all until you get control of yourself. How can you be in control of a horse, if you can't control your own self? [Confused]

There was an article in Horse Illustrated magazine last month called "setting the pace" and it was about basically what you are experiencing problems with. I agree with jumpers flat work is deffinately essential when setting the pace (if its not working while jumping).
If you are interested in the article you can access it from their website
www.horseillustrated.com

it also talks a lot about focusing on yourself - you can be a big part of your horse's problem (and sometimes we forget that)

WTH jumpers...I think you shouldn't jump to conclusions if you don't know what you're talking about....

For one thing..I rode for about 15 min at the show, before I gave up and went home. For another thing..I live about 2 min down the road from the barn..and for another..where did I say I jumped her extensively at home? I said I jumped all my jumps..I didn't say I had a course of 24 3'6" oxers set up.

Also..I said I cooled her out after-wards..I didn't say I hucked her away steaming. In my opinion..it's better to walk away, then do something you'll regret.

I said I had a bad day and felt horrible about the way I treated Sunny and how everything turned out. I don't think you're helping any when you come on here ripping me apart about how I should "find someone else to ride my horse because I can't control myself".

that did come across as harsh jumpers, but you said you were alreay under a lot of stress and didn't mean for it to, so maybe you could have edited the post some. oh well it doesn't matter, everyone makes mistakes, and if I am ever getting super frustrated I just get off also, its better that i get off when I'm really mad then working on it when I am just going to make things worse. Grant it though, it did sound like you over worked her in your post Zorse, but now that we know the facts (ie how close you live to the show and how much you warmed her up) it doesn't seem so bad. Anyway, I think it was just a misunderstanding. Hope you are having better rides now [Smile]
