Why can't you halter and butt rope the foal and have someone or two people, hold the filly where the mare can see her while you wash the mare? [ April 17, 2004, 03:58 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

I disagree with Sandra on this one. A 2 week old filly has NO PLACE on a wet concrete floor. If you must bathe the mare, then stand her in the yard to do it.
I wouldn't put that filly in the wash stall unless the floor is covered with rice mats. But that's just me - I don't take ANY chances with babies. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

If your not showing why bath at all. I would just give her a dam good brush and sponge her in her own stall with the foal at foot.
I would wash her tail if it is still iffy from foaling, but apart from that wouldn't bother until the foal is weaned or doesn't mind being on her own in the stall.
Just my opinion. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

yeah i agree with candygirl. give her tail a wash by all means, but i would suggest giving her a good old spruce with a dandy brush. plus, your mare will love to be groomed, rather than got all wet! lol

OK, I did NOT say to put the filly into the wash rack. When I read the post I thought it was the MARE who needed washing. I can't see what it would hurt to have someone hold the filly nearby while the mare is being washed. Like in the hallway in view of the mare. Naturally I would expect who ever is washing the mare to get busy, not mess around, and get the job done ASAP. Yes, washing the mare outside (if it's warm enough where they are)would be better, but your still going to need to have someone hold the filly nearby because if she wanders off to far the mare is not going to want to stand still. Besides it would not hurt one bit for the filly to learn that there are times she is going to have to stand still for humans to do things. The eariler she has this sort of leasson the better. Holding her nearby while the mare is being washed would be perfectly alright as long as the person/s holding her know what they are doing.
Oh...and we have never lost one foal yet...so I guess it is safe for me to say that we don't take ANY chances with babies either.... ![[Blushing]](graemlins/blush.gif) [ April 17, 2004, 05:02 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

it's really not neccesary to wash your horse, unless you have a show coming up. This could be dangerous, and the foal could really hurt himself!! But if this must be done, so it outside on an area that has good traction...grass can be slippery too when it gets wet, so i would have someone hold the filly still away from the water and grass completely. Or if you have rubber mats that's helpful too:-)

Foals can get seriously dirty!! I have washed them at an early age with no problems, but I brush them super well first and someone was holding the foal with a but rope. I just sponged bathed and did not turn the hose on them or anything. I didn't use soap either. All the foals I have washed this way have survived and grown up just fine. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Wash her out in the grass. Get someone to hold her instead of tying her up. It will be a pain in the *** , but it will be safer for both. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
