My father and I want to go to a horse auction just for fun and the experience. We are not planning on buying anything because we are well aware of the risks. Does anyone know any good horse auctions near the Ohio area or not too far away that we could go to look at some good 4h horses or western pleasure horses? Thanks

Hello,
On yahoo groups there is a group called Horsechatter. This group has set up a buddy list to ask questions of and travel with people to auctions in there area. They would be a big help for you. Especially if you want to make sure you are getting exactly what you want. There is an auction buddy listed for the auction in Sugar Creek Ohio it runs every friday starting at 9am runs all day. Usually 100+ horses. Anyways here is the buddy contact for that auction Her name is Joyce the email address is docketdog1@yahoo.com Email her and let her know your plans also let her know you got it from a member on HorseChatter. She will be able to answer all of your questions for ohio auctions.

Go to your local tack/feed shop. They will usually know the big show auctions. Many of them are not publicised because they don't want the Killers at them. Plus the prices are way beyond the killer prices anyways.

Is there any particular reason you're wanting to buy from an auction instead of a private seller?

Well, we have looked at all the private sellers around here. We were not satisfied with any of the horses. They were either too much money, not qualified enough, not broke good enough, or too old. We have one horse in mind tho. He is 7 yrs old, gelding, bay, 15.3 hands, and broke a little for reining and we had thought about just getting him and working w/ him up to western pleasure. He used to be a ranching horse in South Dakota. We still are thinking about it. one problem is that he is a cribber but they said they would throw in a miracle collar w/ him for free. They said when its on he doesn't crib at all. Another problem is that i am not sure if i could get him well enough trained by myself for wp at local 4h shows and we dont want to have a trainer. But a plus is the sellars are in my 4h club and are nice ppl who would not rip us off. They said they would sell him for 900 - 1000 dollars which is fairly cheap in my area. Give me your suggestions! Thanks! Dawn now that i have wrote all this and thought about it from this point of view i am seeing it your way towards a private seller. But in the end its not my choice because i already have a horse and this would be my brothers horse and desion. Thanks!

Well, if you go to just your normal run of the mill auction, you might not get to ride, and there's no guarentee that the horse is going to be trained the way you want/need it to be. If you go to a higher end auction, you're going to end up paying an arm and a leg probably, although you will end up with a very nice horse most likely. How long have you been looking for a horse? Is anyone in your 4H group selling? I guess if they were, you'd have looked into it besides this one of course.

Since you're fairly close you could try contacting the University of Findlay's western farm. I went to school there and I know they have a lot of decent horses there and a lot are for sale too. I could even tell ya which ones are good to ask about. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I would not go tot an auction like Sugarcreek or Mt. Hope looking for ashow prospect. Sugarcreek is mostly a meat auction, if you ask me. You will not be able to ride the horses at either of those either. There are tons of horses for sale in the Ohio area, and that one you re looking at for 900 sounds like a steal. If you have a weak stomach, take your barf bag with you to Sugarcreek! Mt. Hope is better, but you still won't know what you are getting until you get it home and vetted, and by then it is to late. Those auctions are in Amish Country, they don't have broke and trained saddle horses that you are looking for. I think you are asking for a lot of horse without wanting to pay for it. A fairly well broke and trained horse that is ready to be shown, in this area, is going to run you at least 2500/3000.

I agree with Drafts about the Sugarcreek auction, skip it. I live fairly close to it - I went once and was appalled at what I saw.

I went to a few auctions amd let me tell you it is not fun. The high end auctions are nice, but the horses are high priced and you than might as well buy from a private seller. The cheaper auctions can be very sad. I went to one down south and the killers were there bidding on horses, and I went to Crowley's Auction in Mass. and the horse i ended up leaving with (i got him out of pity) was a 17 hand tb gelding with a several day old gash on his head that was extremely infected and not being treated. they never even brought him out to be sold because they claimed they didn't have the right crowed and it would have been a waste of time. I ended up going into the office and buying him i felt so bad. I worked at a sale barn for a long time and the dealer we got our horses from would get them from auctions across the country and in canada and he always talked about go to the auctions and bidding agist the killers. How sad is that to watch a horse get sold to a killer, not my idea of fun. I have never been back to an auction since I rescued Barney and I have no plans of going back anytime soon (except maybe a high class warmblood/sporthorse auction)

Well we checked out the horse today. She is a mare, registered quarter horse about 15.1 hands. She is very sweet and nice. She is a bay with a lonf and beautiful tail and mane. I love her but it is jake's choice. Jake decided that he loves her too. She only has one problem which is that she cant rein. I tested her out and i think with a little work she will get it. My neighbor said he would help me train her since he is very good but the only thing she needs brushed up on is her reingin otheriseshe knows everything. She is also 6 yrs old and was origionally priced at 2,500. But dada has talked him down to 2,000. I'm soo excited!

thats great!
Katie got whiskey at old fox farm which is an auction and she didnt like it AT ALL! she said that almost all the horses there were mistreated and they stayed in the stall ALL day and she said that the has very little pasture. Whiskey came to her with some feet probs but is good now. She said she would never go back.
I may end up going to the old fox farm just to look be cause even tho I agree that the lower money auctions can be awful but just think..if you do leave with a horse...u may have just saved its life.

Congrats ! on your new horse I know you are so excited. Also thanks to those giving some info on the auctions. I found those on a rescue website. I am going to have to check out sugar creek and save a few of them. It saddens my heart everyday to know where they are going. Don't worry we are working very hard on the HR857 bill and will stop those killers. At least in the United States. If anyone can give me more info on sugar creek please email me privately at webmaster@farmersbulletin.com
