Hi... I just bought a Thoroughbred whose background is a mystery. She is tattooed but the tattoo is not really readable. Does anyone know of any tricks I could use to read the tattoo and find out my horse's pedigree and possible race history?

Do you know what his registered name?? Or do you have his JC papers?? If you know his reg name or have his JC papers you can go to www.jockeyclub.com and type either one in!!!

I'm a long way from you...Duluth! Too far north if you ask me...I'm originally from Preston. It's too cold for too long up here. What breed of horses do you have? (And thanks for responding!)

I know absolutely nothing about her except that she somehow ended up at an auction, hungry and pregnant, slated for slaughter. She's had a couple good owners since then and now I'm very happy to have found her. If I could decipher her tattoo I can have the Jockey Club research it for $35.

If you had the tatoo, you can find places and people to do it for free. $35 is still pretty cheap.
I would get your vet to help you read it.

You could ask the vet when he's out. There was a tb at my old barn that they'd had for years and no one could read it. The dentist came out to do teeth once and they asked him to look. He didn't have any problems reading it at all.

Thank you Dawn! Now I have hope. If I can't find out this horse's pedigree it'll drive me crazy. But even if I never find out I'll still be one of the happier people in the world just for being a horse owner again ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Here is what I found online: TRACING YOUR HORSE’S PAST Racing Records and Pedigrees The Equine Line of the Jockey Club Information Systems can provide you a variety of pedigree options for your horse and/or a variety of race record options. Samples are available to help you choose. These are the official records of your horse. By using a charge card, you can order on-line and receive your product printed out to you immediately. Go to: www.equineline.com.
Please note: You must have your horse’s racing name to order. Records are NOT filed by tattoo number. If you only have your horse’s tattoo number, please, read the section on Tattoo Research.
Tattoo Research If you do not have your horse’s Jockey Club papers and do not know your horse’s racing name, you can still learn about your horse’s history through his tattoo. The tattoo is on the inside of the upper lip. It will begin with a letter of the alphabet followed by 5 numerical digits. There is a code to this alphabet with each letter of the alphabet standing for the year of birth. For example, a horse foaled in 1991 will have a tattoo that begins with the letter U followed by 5 numerical digits. A horse foaled in 1992 will have a tattoo that begins with the letter V followed by 5 numerical digits and so on.
Tattoo Chart A=1971 B=1972 C=1973 D=1974 E=1975 F=1976 G=1977 H=1978 I=1979 J=1980 K=1981 L=1982 M=1983 N=1984 O=1985 P=1986 Q=1987 R=1988 S=1989 T=1990 U=1991 V=1992 W=1993 X=1994 Y=1995 Z=1996 A=1997 B=1998 C=1999 D=2000 E=2001 The numerical digits are the last 5 digits of your horse’s Jockey Club registration papers. Please note: If your horse does not have a tattoo, then your horse did not race at a parimutuel track. This does not mean that your horse was not on the track and did not have race training including official timed works. Any number of circumstances (illness, injury, lack of funds to continue training, death of owner, etc.) might have prevented your horse in full race training from ever being entered in their first race, therefore, causing them to leave the track without being tattooed.
Using a flashlight and perhaps the help of your veterinarian, write down the alphabet letter and the 5 digits of the tattoo to the best of your ability. The Jockey Club Information Systems offers a tattoo research for a reasonable fee. Once you have your horse’s racing name, you can obtain his race record and/or pedigree. For more information on obtaining tattoo research visit their website or call them on the phone. They are most helpful and cordial! Go to: www.tjcis.com or call: 800-333-1778. Thank you Sandra, that's very helpful! Now it's just a matter of being able to read the tattoo, as I know nothing else about her, including whether or not she was raced. (I'm guessing not since she doesn't mind stopping!)

Is there a race track near by, maybe you can take her there, and have one of them read it.
Have you thought, maybe that is why you have her, cause she LOVES stopping ha ha ha - J/K

The closest racetrack is Canterbury at the Twin Cities...but today (do you think this is a sign?) I saw two guys with jackets that had a racehorse and a TB farm name. I asked them where the farm was and it turns out it's about 30 minutes away! I had no idea there were any racing TB farms around here. I talked to them a little about it and he said he'd be willing to look at her...but we didn't have time to say much else. By the way, that was a good idea, thanks!

At least one vet has looked at her and couldn't read it...but with every reply like yours I get more hope! Thanks! The problem is that she has papers out there somewhere but I have no idea where...and I would really like to know what kind of breeding she has.

I read that blistering winds said you could get people to search your tattoo for free rather than paying the jockey club $50. I have my horses tattoo number and would like to find out about his history. If anyone can help me let me know! thanx

We too have a tattooed TB mare who's tattoo is impossible to read. Contact the Jockey Club with her registered name, registration number, any info. you can give them. That's the only way you'll be able to get any info I'm afraid.

The only race records you can see online is through the DelMar free pedigree database. The only races shown will be what the horse's owners have physically inputted onto the computer.
According to my search, your gelding Parable was born in 1993. Is that correct? His record shows 3 stakes races.
Our mare Distant Hour had 40 races, and none of them show up on the on-line database because nobody took the time to edit the horse's information and add the races.
For a full print-out report (the official report) you have to contact the Jockey Club and pay the fee. They send you a packet with the details of every race including location, date, jockey, track, conditions, etc. [ February 22, 2004, 07:19 PM: Message edited by: Jumpers ]

Here is the link with his pedigree. You can print it out if you like:
Parable's pedigree
Notice at the top of the screen there are other options (drop down menus) you can explore these to edit Parable's information, view the 3 stakes races that are entered for him, etc.
