Hey everyone...it snowed for the first time ever today in the state of maryland this year...ive only had my horses for almost a yr and i havent had them in snow yet...is there anything i should be worried about?...i have coats on them...and they keep running around and rearing and kickin and biting...is this playing or fighting?. ..i think its playing but i was just questioning...and could i ride in our ring in the snpw on my other horses?...or would it be too dangerous riding in the snow? ![[Running Horse]](graemlins/horse.gif)

They are having fun, just like you would. If the snow fall is heavy, you might want to put realy spaced out piles of hay for them, if it's not thick don't worry they will use their natural instinct of pawring to find the grass.
Riding, be careful if you go out on the roads, especially if they have shoes on, can be real slippy. You could also put a bit of hoof oil on their soles, stop their feet getting packed with snow, anything else, don't think so. Have fun and make a snow man, with a carrot nose ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Kaitlyn,
We're up in Lancaster, got the same storm as you, and had about 6" on the ground by about noon. I'd be careful if you decide to ride. Riding in snow is not a big issue for the horse, but we had a thaw this afternoon, and the snow/slush will refreeze tonight. Footing won't be the best. I worry about bowed tendons. On level ground and keeping the horse collected on turns, you ought to be fine. If it never melted at all down there, you ought to be fine, but I'd still stink to trails you know have no footing surprises... ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Riding in snow is fun! Just be careful, especially if theres ice under the snow. I would put some of that cooking spray, like PAM on the soles of their hooves. It keeps the snow from balling up in them.If you'll just be riding in an arena, you should be ok.I dont ride up or down steep hills when theres snow on the ground. I wouldnt do any fast stops or turns either,it would be too easy for the horse to lose their balance. Have fun!! I cant wait until it snows here!

You have to be incredibly careful when your riding in the snow. If the snow get bad...i would recomend not to ride at all. Be carefull on the roads...very careful! Stay Safe!

dont worry i dont ride on our roads at all because they r country roads and u can tell if a car is comin or not from all the turns...usaully if i have to use the road to get to the ncr trail i walk them there so they dont spook or anything...besides i just want to ride sonny in the ring for one of my first times on him....hes my dads...soo im tryin to get him to become friendly and work with him while junior my horse is still unable to be ridden...ill be extra careful!!! and i most likely wont do anything fast yet soo mabe just a jog if that with him...i just wanthim and i to get to kno each other... ![[Running Horse]](graemlins/horse.gif)

I LOVE riding in snow...but I suppose I'm used to it since my location guarrantees it Like others said, the only thing I would be worried about is slipping in no-so-great footing. But honestly, there's nothing better than going on winter trail rides and riding through snow drifts...
