I feed both alfalfa and Coastal (grass) hay.

Alfalfa for the nutritional value and Coastal for the Long stems, and "filler" capabilities.

ok bw- i have a question-my old horse(arab mare) was on alfalfa for weight and we slowly introduced it. she was in top!!! condition i meen doing 100 mile endurance races fit. any way so we got her used to it and she tyied up and was out 4 three months! so im sceptical bout usimg it again and my mare now (maddie) is on timothy but is losing way to much weight so we are looking into switching that is why i did this poll because she is on tons of grain corn oil and gets 5 flks hay each meal 2x's a day has a tiny bit of grass in feild and so we are very concerned! so what do u think i can do?

Tying up has TONS of causes, without an exact pinpoint for every horse. Most have been linked to an electrolyte Imbalance. So watch your electrolytes more than anything on a Tye up horse.

You say she's older? When was her last full checkup with blood draw? I'd run a full blood panel with electrolytes. To see how she is now. You can give her a mix, if you are worried, and if she shows any problems, yank it all together.

If you feed timothy, are you Supplementing Magnesium? Well if you have her on a grain, it should be fine. Just a horse on 100% timothy usually suffers from Grass Tetany from lack of Mg.

I feed 1-2 flakes coastal and 1 flake alfalfa every feeding. I haven't had issues with it. I've also fed straight alfalfa 2 flakes a feeding during hte winter. No coastal.

no the arab was 13 and she still is!lol it was a week after x-mas and we were walking and trotting so wasnt hot or anything and i cooled her out and put her in the cross tyes to clean her stalls and she wouldnt move. so we called my trainer and gave her all this **** . anyway i bought her from that trainer and i gave her back and now she is used in a lesson 1once a week. go one my pix page its khalina that one at her first show thats a very old pic but u can see her if u like. maddie the one who is lossing weight is on buckeye show formula (has no corn cuz she is very hi strung) and ultimate finish additives if that helps!
