Today while grooming Curly, my 9 year old Tennessee Walking/Morgan gelding I found a few things that kind of made me wonder..

The first skin issue is on his face near his ears, it looks like the hair is being rubbed off, but it is slightly scaly. I have just noticed this today, and it hadnt been their before. I have just swithed to a new halter, could that be causing it? Could this be ringworm?

Second it a tiny place on his back, in the center back towards his flanks where the hair looks to have been rubbed off, even though there didnt seem to be any open sore or wound there I put some hydrogen peroxide on it. It fizzed greatly..could this be a saddle sore? I wouldnt think it would be, my saddle fits OK and I dont believe it would be the saddle pad, which is one of those tacky ones. Or could this just be a knick or scrape that he recieved in the feild? He stays outside almost all the time. Is it OK if I still ride him?

And lastly, as I have said, he has a few scrapes and they are healing nicely, but sometimes the flys bug him about them. Is it still okay to put fly spray on it?

I can't comment on ringworm b/c I haven't personally seen it - but wanted to comment on the other two things you mentioned.

The peroxide would be fizzing like crazy b/c your horse is dirty/dusy. Not b/c there is infection. Any bit of grime will make hydrogen peroxide fizz like that. If the mark is directly in the middle of his back, it's unlikely it's a saddle sore. Your saddle should not be pressing or rubbing on his spine. Saddle sores will generally appear near the whiters or on either side of the spine, where the saddle will rub. (Have someone knowledgeable in saddle fitting check your saddle if you are concerned) He could have nicked himself in the field. If there is no open wound, or he is not sore there - then there should be no problem riding. Could it be a 'love bite'?

As for the fly spay on scrapes... If it is an open wound. Do not spray fly spray on it. You can spray it on a sponge or cloth and wipe it around the wound - that will help.

You know you are a horse person when...
...You pull change from your pocket , and hay falls out.
...you yell at the kids, and the horse's name pops out.
...you actually get to a point where flies don't bother you so much.

..Okay! Thanks very much on telling me about peroxide fizzing on dirt or grime. I would have been a nervous wreck if every little bump fizzed like mad. As for the head problems, my mom's B/f said that it could be where the halter rubs and to take it off. Though I am quite worried about doing that as he has roughly 3 acres of feild to roam, and as he is still new to me I dont really know if I could catch him.

Here is a product that I highly reccommend for bumps and scrapes. It works on fungus as well. It will also keep the bugs off boo boo's.

Have you checked your horse's mane for lice??? Lice congrigate and nest in the high points of a horses body (generally mane and along back).

Many horses rub about thier ears due to them.

They are very small but are noticeable witht he naked eye generally at the base of hairs.

They cause skin irritation and sometimes skin scaling/dandruff.

If your horse has them you should wash and wipe all your tack, and 'dust' him/her with lice powder. Most powders will need a re-application in a week or 2 to ensure the 'demise' of the unhatched larvae.

Something else to look for!!

For the wounds with flies bothering them..I use this stuff called "SWAT" it's a wound ointment that keeps flies away from. I've found it to work quite well and I always have a jar on hand. Good luck!

..Also, maybe try halter pads, those furry soft things you attach to your horses halter parts, I've found them to work quite well with rubs. I have also seen halters you can buy with them built in, but only in nylon..maybe you could attach a breakaway to them?

Do you leave the halter on all the time? Halters on a horse while running loose is not advisable.

Halter left on all the time can cause hair loss in the area. From the halter rubbing on the site all the time. Can damage the hair folicles to the point of NO hair growth ever. So be careful.

That and halters tend to get caught on the littlest things that you wouldn't think they would.

The only time I leave a halter on my horse is during nasty weather, where tornado's are imminent. This way if and when my horse does break the fence to get away, he can be caught and be identified because of the ID tag I leave on the halter. And I put the halter on when We are in Tornado Watch time only. I get it off when that is over, and only during like Now till july, where most of the activity is.

I don't know wut it is for sure but try currying him or her then washing him or her I think that helps it a lil but make sure you wash your hands after dealing with your horse becasue it could spread to different horses it you touch them.
