I feel pretty dumb asking this...i hope its not a stupid question. I was just wondering, can applesauce be fed to horses to help them gain weight, or maybe just as a snack once in a while? I've heard of some people using it to give medicine so that it tastes better. Has anyone heard of this or give their horse applesauce? Thanks so much!

Jess
My friends horse just a few months back had choke, she couldn't eat anything hard, not even hay. He was liquidizing apples and carrots, stuff like that.
I know Spys Katie Pony also had choke and she was feeding her apple sauce.
I wouldn't make a habbit it of it, think the sugar content is quite high, unless you make your own.
Lots of other things to help gain weight prepared for horses, and mine loves to bite into a juicy apple.
So unless for medical reasons, I would try something else

I use all natural applesauce from the health food store to give my horses meds. It works really well, just put a glop on top of your grain, add your powdered meds and mix. The applesause/meds mixture will coat every piece of grain and there is no waste as there is when you ise water and the meds disolve. As for weight gain I would just use a suppliment created especially for horses. Cool Calories is pretty good.

Applesauce is one of the things I gave Shenandoah to try to put weight back on him, b/c it was natural and had 100+ calories. Karo syrup was another topper, or corn/veg oil. I've heard of dry milk used for a calcium booster. Do you have a generally thin horse, or does it have a medical condition?
