Our barn may have strangles. Several horses have been sick but it is not confirmed. Some people want to expose all the horse at the same time so that we can lift the (self imposed)quarantine sooner. What are your opinions about this?

Well, unfortunately, sometimes that is the best thing to do. That way in a few weeks, you aren't going through it. I've seen some large barns end up dealing with it for almost a year.
But again, if you sanitize properly, and keep those that are affected away until all clear, then you don't have to. But that is very hard and time consuming. Many people just take the easy way out and expose everyone and just take the chance on everyone getting it.

I've only owned horses for a little over a year and am still learning. What causes strangles & what are the symptoms?

We had a camp horse in a standing stall get sick Bad w/ strangles one year; but by Isolating her as best we could & her buckets totally from the other horses, we managed to keep the whole barn from getting sick (15 other horses.) Strangels is strep virus and not something to mess with, or take lightly. I'd be plenty PO'd if somebody wanted to give my horse strangles so they could go show sooner. Strangles can set up anywhere in the body and be life threatening depending on its site. 9 o/o 10 times its in the lymph glands, lanceable & treatable. Not-so, deep in the body. Get a penicillin resistant strep, or a pen-allegic horse, and you are SOL. Do what's best & right for the horse, not what might let you go play faster. Quarantine is for a reason, in case of strep/ strangles Good Reason.

Amen CJ. I would not expose my horse to it intentionally either. Isolate the infected horse, don't intentionally infect/expose whole barn.
