I've seen these alternative shoes called "Old Macs". Has anyone ever tried them? I think that my horse might like them better than iron shoes because she was barefoot for almost a year and I am not sure if she'll be happy again in shoes, plus I've heard they can do well for a horse. Anyone know about these shoes?

I have a 5 yr. old TB, can you jump in them and do pleasure riding? Not just trails and stuff??

I would not recommend anything like that for jumping.
Boots don't fit 100%. And the last thing you want is the hoof to shift JUST SLIGHTLY during a land. You'll have a lame horse before you know it.
I'd stick to just basic riding. Jump barefoot if you want to jump, but don't want to shoe.

Isnt it bad to jump w/o shoes? I heard it can cause knee and/or hoof problems? I want my horse to be comfortable, any other slip on shoe type things? It's just for pleasure ridding but i want something i can jump in, gallop and not have to worry about my horse falling, she's a TB so her feet aren't "wild horse" or "natural"

There is not a slip on boot available that could withstand the stress of jumping or tight turns/stops. You can jump barefoot I've done schooling shows barefoot with no problems. I also shoe when necessary depending upon the horse and what I plan on doing to the horse. I've seen the old macs and I could not possibly use them for what I do (standardbred racing) they are too heavy and very bulky, but for trails I think they would do all right, but not for anything requireing stress on the feet.

Old Macs are best for trail riding over rough stony ground for the unshod horse. I would never jump in them as the stresses of landing would cause big problems if the boot is ever so slightly loose.

Should I keep iron shoes or should I try some sort of alternative? Most of the ground I'll be riding on is grass/pasture but there is also a ring with sand footing. I want w/e will make my horse the most comfortable. Is there another shoe I should try or just stay with irons or no shoes at all?

I have used Old Macs for two years on five horses and they are the best thing I have bought for my horses. I regularly jump 3 foot logs and other obstacles on the trail . I have seen postings on the web from people who do cross country in the boots. . You need to make sure you have the correct size . A snug fit and the boots are very safe. The main idea using boots is that it allows you to keep your horses barefooted and you only need the boots if your horses get footsore. Definitely saves a fortune plus the health benefits for the horse are many.

I would not feel safe having a slip on boot for jumping etc. I would have this discussion with your farrier, a knowledgeable farrier will tell you what is appropriate for you and your horse. Maybe your horse does have nice feet that doesn't need shoes or the terrain is suiteable for barefoot or if the horses feet are shelly, or bruise easily or if the terrain is rocky, slippery, or uneven. You may not have to have shoes all the time, maybe just for particular events or maybe just during the summer for showing and pull them during the winter, a competant farrier will be able to discuss the various options and condition of your horses feet.
