Stringhalt is a condition that involve the tendon of the lateral digital extensor muscle of the hock. Sometimes its caused by trauma and adhesions may form as it crosses the outside surface of the hock joint. Most cases are isolated but in Australia and New Zealand a stringhalt like syndrome has been noted among horses in pasture. Surgery to free the adhesions and divide the tendon usually afford immediate improvement although it is not 100% The horses in those countries have recovered when removed from pasture. Good luck on your Aunt's horse I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Good, I'm glad its mild, I've seen severe cases where the foot hits the belly. The more milder cases the foot just jerked a bit and only on a few strides, so maybe trails he should be okay or something not too stressful.
