hi all. I have a question about soaking hay. I have been soaking the hay that I feed my horses. I feed them 3 times a day (with a small 4th feeding at night) and everytime I get the hose out and cover the hay with water for a couple minutes in a tub. the thing I'm wondering is, is it okay to use the same water two or three times over a span of about 10 hours to soak the hay in?
each time I soak it, there are of course some leaves and such left in the water and it is a little bit brown-ish from the hay. I don't know if it is possible that they hay might mold or something if I use the same water? it might be a dumb question, but I was just thinking that it might be nice if I could not have to lug the hose out and take the extra 5 minutes to cover the hay with water. but I will with no objections if that is necessary. thoughts?
thanks! --tara

Hmm, good question:) I don't think it should be a problem as long as the water is changed daily. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

I do this with one horse who has heaves. I change the water daily and do not have a problem with it. Sometimes when it is extremely hot in the summer I don't do this because the water tends to become stagnant. It has never posed a problem to me before, since you are adding fresh water each time. As long as it is changed daily.

Same here, I shouldn't see a problem as long as the water is changed daily. My horses used to pick up their hay and dunk it themselves in their water trough so I decided to just soak it instead. Soaking is very good to keep the dust content down and helps relieve problems with COPD.
