I'm just asking if everyone thinks that this is a good amount to feed my 15.3hh, 16 year old TB gelding, who gets moderate work a few nights a week riding.
I feed him about 3 or 4 biscuits of hay a day, and a feed ( made of 1 small scoop lucerne chaff, very small scoop of rice pollard and 2 scoops of oaten chaff, 2 tablespoons garlic, splash of apple cider vinegar, molasses and usually celery or carrots mixed in) whenever I ride. So basically lots of hay e
very single day, and feeds 3-4 times a week.
He also has a mineral lick in his feed bucket to keep him healthy, plus plenty of fresh water!
Sorry if its boring hearing my horse's eating habits but I just wanted to check that its the healthy way to keep him in good condition.
Please reply!!! [Roll Eyes] Jemma

I'm not familiar with most of that, being on the opposite side of the world [Razz]

Just curious about this.
" I feed him about 3 or 4 biscuits of hay a day" Do you mean FLAKES? B/c 4 flakes per day is really not enough in my opinion. I feed 2 flakes per FEED (at 4 feeds per day).

As for the "feed" I have no idea what the first 3 ingredients are so I'm sorry, I can't comment on that one.

You know you are a horse person when...
...You pull change from your pocket , and hay falls out.
...you yell at the kids, and the horse's name pops out.
...you actually get to a point where flies don't bother you so much.

lucerne I believe is an alfalfa . Yep, just looked it up.

Sounds great to me. How many pounds/kg are you feeding the grain?

Is your horse looking good body condition wise or is he loosing/gaining?

Basically, feeding is half scientific, the other half an art. You feed enough to get the nutrients a horse needs, then modify it to create a weight gain/loss/ or maintenance.

Those are all out of a bag, right? If you could give me the %CP, %Ca, P, K of each of those, I can see if he's getting enough of those basic products for ya. [Big Grin]

I got my dietary formula chart up and running finally.

Sorry guys! I didnt realise that we have different names for feeds etc. in Australia! Well, a biscuit of hay is a section of a bale?? You know how a bale of hay is made into about 10 sections, we call one of those sections a biscuit.
I dont know how to explain about the feed though. Thanks for your help anyway!
