Can anyone give me information about asthma in horses? I never really thought of horses getting it until I seen it mentioned.
Can you tell me what symptoms and possible treatment is? Thanks

horses get a condition known by many names including Heaves, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and many others. Its a lot like human asthma. Treatment is tricky, its really more about management. Bedding should be dust-free or low-dust such as paper. Hay should be soaked to reduce dust, and the horse should be groomed outside whenever possible. Warm up for exercise must be slower and more thorough than normal and the horse should be kept as fit as possible. It is also preferable for the animal to live outside as much as possible. Lou

Thanks Lou. Actually this has been considered already, and we seem to think that dust is NOT the problem, because all winter long Babe is in and out of the barn because of cold weather, and is fed from a round bale, which is FULL of dust, yet she doesn't cough once during that season.
We've pretty much ruled it down to allergies, but I was curious if there was something more similar to asthma in horses, in relation to irritation from crop dusts and work, etc.
Thanks for the help though However I think we've finally decided we're just going to take her back to the vet and ask that they do amore thorough examination this time.

They can get hayfever too! That might explain it, lots of horses have allergies to oil seed rape. Lou
