My paint mare breaks out in hives all the time. When she was little the first time I noticed she broke out was when her and her mamma got loose after our halloween party in the barn and [Hah] she took a bite of every single pumpkin there and there were alot because we had a carving contest. The vet said she was fine and to keep an eye on her the hives went away but everyonce in a while she will break out again. I put her on a special feed called LMF and it has made the out breaks stop but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem before?

Yup we have several that anytime they get upset or have a change in routine they break out in hives. One was a show horse and it wasn't too handy when you'd be getting ready to go in for a class and she'd break out!

Is it the smell of their body as I hug their long neck, or the scent only a horse has that I can't forget? Is it the depth of their eyes as they contentedly rest? No, it's just being around them that I like the best.--Teresa Becker

Zoe, my mare, always breaks out with them at the beginning and end of fly season. Poor girl [Wink]

my sister's horse Luc, gets them a lot in the summer. He is allergic to almost everything, (seriously, its easier to list what he SINT allergic to, then what he is) but, when he is around too much of what he is allergic to, he breaks out in hives, such as this time of year, since he is allergic to lots of pollen, and bugs and stuff. he goes on tri-hist around now and it stops them...maybe ur girl is allergic to somethin?

The only time I've seen a horse break out in hives is when it was injected with sedative. It had them for a good couple of days.

i had a mare that was allergic to shavings so she would break out in hives if she got put in another horse's stall by accident. They all went away about two hours after she got taken out if the stall though.

Straw or paper. She was only allergic to wood shavings, it wasnt the dust that was the problem.

Well I dont know about my horse but I know that I get hives when I am stressed and my dog gets them when she eats lizards. We have to give my dog benadryl when she gets to snacking on lizards though since she ends up with quarter sized hives all over. I am hoping my horse doesnt get hives if she does I guess I wont be showing lol

A friend of mine's pony had a right bad attack of hives(nettle rash we call it sometimes)

His belly was plastered with the odeama swellings so bad that we had to call the vet.

We never knew what caused it and he didn't get it again, nothing had changed and he was living out.

All sorts of things can cause the allergic reaction, drugs, insect bites, like lou said bedding.

They are not harmful as long as the odeama isn't extensive(which his was) but it is good to find out the cause.

Shimmer, high protien in feed can cause it, check your protien level in her feed.

A process of elimination as with any alergic reaction. [Smile]

My mare breaks out in hives once or twice a year. They've never been a problem and disappear in a day or so. It's caused by an allergic reaction to something she ate.

Many moons ago, my friend had an Arab gelding that got the worst case of hives I've ever seen. The vet prescribed Benedryl and the horse was fine after a couple of days. They seldom cause a major problem.
