Here's a link to a very good article on WNV.
WNV- Prevention is the KEY !
Read all the way down because there are some very good suggestions as to how to keep down mosquito infestation as well.

I can't help ya with the homemade fly/bug spray. Nothing homemade I have tried worked on these "747's" down here !!!

Lots and lots of mosquito/fly spray. Anything citronella smelling will keep mosquitos away great. I spray my whole BARN area with citronella to keep those buggers away.

Vaccinate, vaccinate VACCINATE!!!! The 25 bucks a year (most expensive I've seen so far) is worth more than the thousands upon thousands that you will spend if your horse gets it, IF HE LIVES through it.

Get rid of stale water, dump your horse's water daily or use an automatic shallow waterer. Keep only enough for your horse to clear completely out.

Well, you can't really prevent your horse from being exposed to West Nile, but some things that you can do to try to minimize your horse from getting it are:

1. I highly suggest vaccinating your horse for WNV, unless of course your horse is allergis, or some other type of problem occurs that you cannot give it to him/her.

2. Fly spraying your horse, will help alot too.

3. Keep your water troughs clean.

4. Try to minimize any standing water, if you cannot do that, there are items that you can put in the water for the mosquito larvae.

Hmm, I post back for anything else that comes to my mind!

--------------------
Mares:
Honey-buckskin(in-foal to a smutty buckskin stallion)
BG-palomino/dunalino(foaled a beautiful filly)

Blue-blue roan(we aren't too sure what we are going to do with this filly yet....but she is a cutie)

Geldings:
Poco-sorrel/overo*Paint*(Awesome riding horse!)
Brandy-*FOR SALE*(Nice 2 yr old, going into training soon, price will go up, feel free to ask me about him..if you are interested)

If your horse should come down with WN, don't panic, it is rarely fatal, the recovery rate is over 80%. There are numerous cases of horses coming down wiht WNV even though they have been vaccinated. Some getting very mild cases, some getting full blown cases. I am not saying to not vaccinate your horse, just giving you more facts. There have also been numerous reports of horses being fine with the first initial 2 shots, then having violent reactions to it the following year. While prevention is the key, I dont think that the vaccine alone will protect your horse, just my opinion though.
Getting rid of brush and debris around your barn, no standing water,(old buckets, tires, etc)dump water tubs/buckets daily, scrub with bleach weekly, keep fans running during the summer months in your stalls, spraying your stall walls with fly spray paying special attention in between cracks, and dark corners, where mosquitos hide during the day. Mosquitoes come on out in flocks at dawn and dusk, so limit turn out time in those hours.
I use Wipe Fly spray and add 4oz of Skin So Soft, 4 oz of appple cider vinegar and 4 oz of citronella oil. [Big Grin]

I am going to put feeder fish, the 8-10/ $1 goldfish in the slow moving 'run'/ creek adjacent to my property. I already have 2 in the water tank, and no mosquitos can set up in there. There are a couple bats I see that come out and work thru the bugs attracted to the yard light, yeaa! Qmist (automatic), fly spray, and oh yeah, Raps shots. I hope that does it!

PLease spot me on this, but people nervous @ the WNV vaccine, whether first shot(s)or old horse, should insist on the Killed virus, not the live version? Seems the worse problems are w/ the Live vaccine? I waited for the killed to come out & be proven b/c Raps older, 24.

I definitely read @ a live virus vaccine, and I'm pretty sure it was an early one. There's a technical term for live but 'negated' vaccines, and it escapes me right now... who's the med tech out there? [Help!]

B/W, I think it was a link to Fort Dodge promoting their killed vaccine, with a side by side comparison with an older, established, problematic Company X live vaccine. Colors were gaudy, red, orange, green, black print.. (think think, strip gears, smell smoke..)

There are two major types of vaccines: bacteria and viruses. Vaccines are distinguished as being live or dead. Dead vaccines are inactivated through heat, radiation or chemicals. Live vaccine is weakened to reduce it’s potency. Does this answer your question? I don't know of any other term than "weakend live vaccine".

Wait, can you do that? It sounds like a great idea but does it cause any problems for the horses?

For everyone that puts goldfish (more than one small one) in a water trough, when's the last time you checked your ammonia levels? 2-3 medium sized goldfish in a large water trough can create enough ammonia in only a few days to cause a horse to go off their water.

No, spyro, sorry, that's not it. It was definitely west nile vaccine/s, straight up, real aggressive colors, not muted. Sorry for causing the brain strain.
Re the goldfish- ammonia doesn't seem to be a problem, but haven't checked. They do foul the tank, so be prepared to bail it out more often. Raps for one will just as soon go to the tank, in need of bailing, than drink from a cool clean bucket much closer; go figure. Water came out of the same tap.. 2 goldfish currently in 70 gallon tank, no bugs in there. (Pardon my fish-ignorance but doesn't ammonia dissipate/ evaporate? [Confused] )

Fort Dodge has only released Killed vaccines to date.

There is, however, another company with a modified live virus vaccine. ChimeriVax–West Nile virus (Acambis, Inc., Cambridge, MA), a live attenuated chimeric virus vaccine candidate.

I found the info from the CDC pages. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol8no12/02-0229.htm

WHICH, if I read correctly over many sites, they are looking for a human vaccine. NOt an equine vaccine.
