Hiya, Just wondering your opinions on what age you feel is best to start worming a new foal (3 to 4 weeks, 6 to 8 weeks etc...),...and what would you/do you use?

We start worming our foals at about 3 months with a liquid ivermectin.

I appreciate the input!! Let me add a little twist to this question...What if you had a foal that was an orphan, that didn't recieve any of mom's milk (none what so ever)and were worried about if de-worming him would depress his immune system further, or put more stress on his digestive system.(he is a month old and don't want to lose him now) Anyone know about this? At what point would you de-worm and with what?
I apologize for not stating the above in my original post. <smile>

actually, you should start worming them when they start nursing. The mother pass worms when the baby nurses.
I found this information when i went to a seminar on worming and west nile.

Hi LJ, The foal specifically I am talking about here is an orphan, his mom produced NO milk so he is not nursing. He is getting goats milk, foal lac etc... I have never had an orphan foal so that is why I posted this. I am kinda at a loss. My vet is impossible to get a hold of by phone. (small town with lotsa animals to keep him on the run, <smile>) Soooo, anyone? Thanx!!

It is recommened to deworm at six weeks of age then every eight weeks from then on. Young horses arent immune to Ascardis, or roundworms and wreak havoc on young horses with naive immune systems. It is recommend to use a dewormer that will treat these parasites and to double dose per pound basis. Dewormers recommended: Agri-Mectin Paste-all ages Equell Paste-all ages EquiMax Paste-over 4 weeks of age Horse Health Ivermectrin Paste-all ages IverCare Paste-all ages Rotation 1-all ages Zimecterin-all ages (Zimecterin Gold, Quest, Quest Plus, and ComboCare recommended for over 4-6 months)

When I brought my four month old home, I knew first of all that he was in a newly parasite infested area than that of which he came from, such exposure would affect him. I also knew that he could bring some in and that as a baby, he was prone to worms gallore. I wormed him ASAP and then every four weeks for three months straight. I then went to 6 weeks and then to 8 weeks. He is now on an 8 week schedule, but to be honest, I think he needs wormed again, so I am going to worm a week early and I always rotate my wormer.
