OK everyone it is that time of year. Since we have moved, my horses are turned out 24x7. I found a lot of small ticks on them... it was horrible. They embedded in my mare's mane which was not a pretty site, I may have to roach it to get all of them.
Found a few under their jaws and up in their forelocks. I know Ticks are bad, and I killed like 5 so far. I had to wash my mare's mane to now search through the rest of it to find more. It was GROSS, I almost puked.
Is there ANYTHING that I can get or use to keep them off of them? I know the obvious Fly spray with Tick Repellant but any more ideas???
Any info would be great!!!

I am telling you, that bee suit would work!!! I think dottie would look sharp in that! I wonder if the garlic thing or the vinegar thing would work as well. Did you check wigley! I know it is wrigley, I think the first matches his personality better!

Don't know why I didn't think of that last night when we were talking, thought about it later. Strange the things you think of when you are supposed to be sleeping huh?? ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

You know I would love to try. I can't wait to get that camera so I can take a picture of Doc and show you what he did to his fly mask ears!! I just had to laugh at him this morning. Not even mad! QH TSC sells a fogger you can use. It is like $44.00 we were looking into it. They also sell stuff to treat the grass. The grass stuff I haven't checked to see if it is harmfull to animals. They have some for small yards and some for fields. It will treat ticks, fleas, ect. You can fog though.

I had to pull one of Reno the other day. I have a huge tick phobia. Listerine will deter ticks. Works well as a tail dip once a week. Other than that, try to find a fly spray that repels them.

Fly Spray that says it does ticks. Pyrhanna and others do.
On bad infestations, wash your horse with Dawn or Palmalive. Careful to not get in the eyes, but does work great on getting fleas and ticks off dogs, cats, and horses. But do a full body condition afterwards as dawn tends to dry out the skin. DO NOT use antibacterial one.

I have a couple guinea hens loose on my property. They do a bangup job on bugs. I still find a few ticks on Raps, who's bite-sensitive (gets welt), but the bugs are not nearly as rampant as they had been pre-hens.

Thanks guys... I almost freaked.... never had to deal with Ticks before. It was pretty bad in her mane, so I used shampoo to wash the crust out, now to fine tooth comb it. I am sure it hurt her, man did she put up a fight (not like her for that, you could tell it hurt)
I have Piranah, will start to use it. The regular bugs are not bad at my place, just the ticks..
CJ - SO these guinea hens do they make noise? I guess I never heard of anyone haveing them on their property... what type of maintenance do they have to have? Fill us in more!!!

QHGirl,
Sorry, I have had no experience with ticks on horses. It would seem to me that a spray of some kind would help. Are you concerned about Lymes Disease? Can horses get that? I know dogs and people can. What about the oily, stuff you put on a dog every 3 months? Maybe ask you vet if there is a product like that for horses. Mowing the pasutre may also help.

The pasture is pretty low and doesn't need mowed, the other place they eat is in the "barnyard" area and they only do that before we mow for an hour every few days... We need to fence in the back for them... BUT seems wierd they got them.
I thought about that stuff, guess I will call vet. Yea I am worried about that Lymes Disease not sure if horses can get it but if they can... the luck I am having... she will get it!!

Ok, I could be wrong, but I thought lyme disease came from the big deer ticks. Weren't the ticks you pulled off of her small one's?? The guniea hens, yeah Mickey would not like them. They do make a squaking noise. I know several people that have them and they seem to like them. Once again, bird poop YUK! At tsc they have that stuff you can put on your pasture. That might help.

Looks like a road trip to TSC is in order HUM... Mickey hates when I go to TSC... Nothing good comes of it... besides I get TONS of stuff for the horses..
OK, big ticks.. how big are we talking??? The ones I found were no bigger than an ant or tiny spider... BUT in comparison.. is that normal. Not bigger than a fly! OK.. now I am itching... YUCK!!!
Yea mickey hates birds... so that might be a negative on that!!

I hate guineas. But they do eat ticks. Guess you have to weigh out the positives and negatives.

Sorry- didn't realize I'd been paged... THe guinea hens make a little noise when they're settling down or suddenly disturbed. It's kind of a HRACK sound, and luckily doesn't usually go on for very long. I have had some success teaching their walnut sized brains that 'HUSH' means "that's enough/ shut up." They are pretty low maintenance; I fill a dual cat dish 2x a day with guinea/ game bird food. They don't dig/scratch as much as chickens, but they whack horse piles. They like grain "slightly used" o/o horse. I was told if they feel safe and have food they will stay around. Mine have been loose for 3 yrs. They roost in the barn, and nest in a corner ( on ground). They drink out of the trough, or full bucket. One good thing is they don't make runny chicken poop; it's usually dry. Occasionally one has turkey-trots, & that smells evil. They do have flight/ fight reflexes. I have seen them fly 100+ ft (30+m), one got up on the 2nd story of my house. Recently "the baby", 1st surviving hatchling, now 2yrs, took Issue w/ polyester pants I had on & attacked the seam. Usually he's content to untie shoelaces. He follows @ like a dog. Imprinted? Had a lot of handling. The hens squooshed a lot of chicks in the nest the 1st year by rolling eggs, but the 2nd year 20 chicks hatched at once (laid by 2 hens 1-2 eggs a day.) I take the chicks away ASAP & can raise them for a while in a muck bucket w/ bedding & a task light. A rabbit hutch after that worked great. The babies are easy marks for predators day & night, & temp sensitive, eg a soaking rain or cool night is lethal. I am looking forward to the next batch; they are very cute as babies & worth having @, even when they need to be told hush/s-u.

One of the guineas flew out of the woods & smack into the side of the house. Managed to grasp the bathroom window ledge (skinny) & then had a new problem; the roof is 10' (3m) above him & the ground is 10' below. Nothing but a window b/t bird & either choice & no way I could get to it. I waved; "You're one your own buddy." Not real sure how it did get down... Oh yeah, arms akimbo p/o's the guineas; they look up & down then hitch their wings. Only got guinea upside the head while nesting tho from 'Miss Herbal' (when she's nesting she's miser'ble.)
