OK, the past weekend I hear something flying around... Please keep in mind I am not thinking about doing this - NOR do I think this is a good idea... so please I am just putting rummor information up if anyone else has heard it...

For mares that are showing, I heard that they are now placing "marbles" in their uterus to make them "think" they are pregnate so they don't cycle and have to be put on regimate. Marbles are not like little marbles but maybe like egg size... never seen them so I am not for sure

Pros and cons I know,
I would think the body would expel a foreign object?
If the object was not in for a whole year would the body may act like it had a misscarriage?
If it was in long, would they bag up and begin to show signs of labor?

HUM... interesting is all I can say!

Yup a friend of mine just had this done to her hunter/jumper mare cause she's a total witch when she's in heat. I guess so far it seems to be working for her.

Is it the smell of their body as I hug their long neck, or the scent only a horse has that I can't forget? Is it the depth of their eyes as they contentedly rest? No, it's just being around them that I like the best.--Teresa Becker

So its like a birth control thing for horses [Razz] Does the vet insert it. Is it vet approved or something that is bought from a store or soemthing. What are the side effects of it. Personally If it is harmless I would say go for it. Humans have items that are put in the uterus so that we do not become pregnant but it would be great to find something that would also stop "that time of the month" as well. Gonna go searching the internet hehe I will post if I find anything!

Yup farmers have actually done this for years. The marbles that I've heard of them using are the big marbles (the ones that you use to knock the little marbles out of the circle) As the marble moves around the uterus it stimulates the excretion of the eCG hormone acting just like a blastocyst would in a mare during early pregnancy. eCG is the hormone that tells the mare the the blastocyst is a pregnancy and not foreign material, thus it keeps her body from trying to expel/kill the blastocyst. Since the marble is tricking the mare into thinking she is pregnant she won't try to "kill" the marble.
The trouble is that this technique will only work for a small amount of time(Sorry can't remember how long something in my head is telling me 3 months)
Just a regular old large size marble(sterilized of course) will work. But I'm sure that people are marketing a marble just for this procedure.
I've never actually done this myself but a vet was telling me about it. Since the old timers used to do it I'm sure that a regular layman can do it and that you don't need a vet. As far as I know the only problem is that the effects only last for a short time and I'm not sure what happens to the marble after it's efficacy has worn off.

yeah they're cheaper then regumate but then there's the ultrasound cost every three months or so to make sure it's in the right spot...

True... but it is ALOT safer for People... regumate can really mess you up if you get it on you and it soaks in your skin!

I jsut read about this teh other day on another site. Hmmm, I still have questions, though, like how long can you leave it in there without infection? How long does it take them to get back to regular cycling? And, like QHgirl, would they think that they had foaled out after it's removal??
I did read that a layman should not do this, only a vet. The marble has to be placed in the right position inside the uterus.

Only those who risk going too far, will ever know how far they can go.
