What is her temperature?
Did you make sure she passed the entire placenta?
Was it a difficult birth that she may have torn something?
I would definitely have my vet take a look at her. The only time I recall a mare having any type of discharge after foaling it was abnormal.

I have not checked her temp yet but she is eating and seems fine. She had a hard labor but I dont think she tore anything, and she passed the plecenta fine she layed down and passe all of it good. I just dont know if it has something to do with her being a maiden mare or not.

My advice to be 110% sure would be to call your vet, make sure she has cleansd properly and there is no infection.
Sometimes even if you think a mare has complelely cleansed herself of the afterbirth, there maybe a small part remaing that could get infected.
A small amout of discharge is normal, but only a bit and old blood colouring(a bit like a woman after a baby) but if there is the slighest foul smell or the discharge is yellow/greenish this could be a sign of infection.
You realy need to know her temperature and keep a check on it. 101 is normal anything above this could indicate all is not well.
As for her having a difficult labour - just one thing that sticks in my mind is my friends mare - she had such a bad time that she tore her colon and had to have the longest part I have ever seen removed, she also tore inside.
She survived, but that was only due to quick action from the vet.
So please put your mind at rest and make sure this discharge IS normal by getting her checked by you vet asap.
Above worst case cases, not wanting to scare you, I wish all is well for you. Just be aware that things can go wrong and the only person to put that right is you Vet. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Yes I understand that. I cant have my vet check her untell monday . I will check her temp and I already smelled the discharge and it does not have a smell there is no yellow or greenish color to it just a little blood so I will call my vet and ask her again what she thinks and if she is concernend I will have her come out tomarrow. Thanks for your replies ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Hi Shimmer
Have you managed to take her temp Yet?
It sounds like she is fine, but her temp will tell you all is not so well
Seems like she has a very good caring owner, if things change, call your vet as an emergency, if she stops eating or her behaviour changes.
good luck my friend, keep us updated.

a mare who bleeds after foaling needs to be seen asap. those symptoms are complacent to ruptured blood vessels or varicose veins and many other problems. though the mare isn't in a life or death situation, she could become anemic or infections can develop. there's so many possibilities. could even be a rupture of the endometrium or the inner lining of the uterus... until the horse is looked at and examined, it's impossible to tell.
as you know, very important to get the vet out!
good luck with your mare and foal though, hope all works out fine.

Ok I called the emergency vet to see if he needed to come out and I told him what all was going on he said it is normal and is fine as long as she is eating good (which she is) and is acting normal (which she is) and also as long as her temp is good and it is 100.4 which im pritty sure is normal. I had called a good friend of mine that breeds many mares and he said to give her 25cc of penicylin, but when I told the vet thiis he said no to let nature take its corse since she dosent have a fever then there is no need for the antibiotic. So I am going to just watch her. Hmm I just dont know.

someone said the foal was born 5 days ago? if that is the case, then bleeding from the mare after 5 days isn't normal. however, in your post you say 3 days ago the foal was born...i personally still don't consider that normal but obviously there are many different opinions. is this a lot of blood? is it continuous or is it just drops every now and again?

I would ask your vet to check to see if there's any placenta still left in. There's a part of it, the horn I believe, that often doesn't get passed along with the rest of it. But if she passed all of it (All parts were there) than I think it's something else, like a fissure.

You have another post going dated the 7th May, Please Help - foal with scours.
You say in this one the foal was 3 days old on 8th, it is the 9th here in UK that would make the foal at least 4 days old.
What date was the foal born on?
Please listen to Craig he is the Equine Vet, you can click on his homepage, see the practice he works for.
You need a vet, get Mare and Foal sorted today, tomorrow could be too late SORRY TO BE BLUNT.
I would not waste time trying to guess answers on the forum with such a delicate situation. [ May 09, 2004, 02:27 PM: Message edited by: CANDYGIRL ]

The only vet that is working this weekend is the one I spoke with and he is the best we have around here he is still 30 to an hour away. I asked him what he thought and he said a small amount of discharge is fine and to just keep an eye on her. The baby had scours because I didnt pull momma off grain soon enough and she is fine now no more scours as of yesterday. the baby was born thurs morning at 2:30. It is a small amount of blood and it looks like old blood. I know the safest thing to do is to have the vet out but he told me not to worry and he is the only one on call today. If something was way wrong wouldnt she have a temp and wouldnt she not want to eat? She is eating twice what she normally used to.

No way would I argue with you mate
Just concerned for you and your mare and foal
It is a worrying time, and I know things can be different over the pond.
We have vets on call 24/7 365 days a year, never ever any problems getting a vet, no matter what, so I understand
Please Please don't ever think that my posts are anything but trying to help and concern
Good luck my friend
