AI or Live coverage?

Not riding her the first and last month or riding her lightly the first and last month and moderatly in the other months?

we are seriously thinking about breeding honey in June or July now(although it may not happen..) and i still need to do some research. Any info will help. Ive been researching things on google but its alot of info to pick through.

Thanks!

Live cover is nice, but there is a greayt risk of having mare, stallion or both getting hurt. AI is nice also, you dont have to worry about any injuries due to kicking, biting, ect. We aren't going to be doing live cover on our mares for very much longer, we will start to get into the AI. As far as riding, if you ride her lightly at the beginning and end of the pregnancy she should be okay.
I have a question for you though, why are you breeding her so late in the year? (Just wondering)

Good luck!

--------------------
Mares:
Honey-buckskin(in-foal to a smutty buckskin stallion)
BG-palomino/dunalino(foaled a beautiful filly)
Dibby-dun(in-foal to a palomino stallion)
Star Bucks-buttermilk buckskin(not bred, we may just use her as a riding horse)

Fillies:
Lizzy-grulla(will be used as a broodmare in the future, due to an injury as a weanling...we are unsure if she will be riding sound, although she might be, as her injury has healed so well...you can't even tell)
Sheba-black(hopefully will be shown in Halter classes starting this year)
Blue-blue roan(we aren't too sure what we are going to do with this filly yet....but she is a cutie)

Geldings:
Poco-sorrel/overo*Paint*(Awesome riding horse!)
Brandy-*FOR SALE*(Nice 2 yr old, going into training soon, price will go up, feel free to ask me about him..if you are interested)

Foals:
Tinker Bell- Red dun filly. Nice short neck, long legs, beautiful eyes..absolutely beautiful. Very people friendly.

Other 2 foals are expecting between May and June.

well, right now we cant do it (parents said) but they said that later on in the year is going to be a good possibility. Another reason is that i am going to pay for some of the stud fee so i need ot get the money. it wont take me long to do though. Also i want to do more research and try to figure out her heat cycle more...

Figuring heat cycle? Get you some Progesterone!! Most AI's I've seen and heard of doing, it is common to see the mare put on something like Regumate, then brought off of it to be SURE of an exact ovulation.

ok, well ill talk to my parents more then talk to a vet. We dont have one for her yet but i can find one!

Is Chilled or Frozen semen better? Which has a higher conception rate?

Both have similar conception rates because in order to use frozen, you have to double up on the semen.

It also depends on where the stallion is...if it a long distance, it is easier to use frozen.

The closest way to be SEMI sure of exact ovulation, is to have the vet palp the mare during her heat cycle, he can feel the ripeness of her follicles and a good reproductive vet will be able to pin point withing hours. Keep in mind that Regumate is very expensive, talk with your vet about how they reccommend doing things. Can you tell when your mare is in heat?? Some mare's have *silent heat cycles*, some are *hot to trot* if your mare is *hot to trot* when she is in heat, I wouldn't bother using regumate. I also wouldn't suggest you breeding her late in teh year, take into account when she will be foaling out if you do that, what is your weather like in, say, Oct or Nov, cold? I bet it is. AI is safer for the mare and stallion, but, IMO, doesn't have as high of conception rate as live coverage. The potency of the semen has a lot to do with it, so does timing, you pretty much have to be right on the money with AI'ing, especially if you are getting it shipped, vet says, within 12 hours, you have to contact stallion owner to collect semen and ship it within those 12 hours. (time just an example) And also, remember if your mare doesn't take the first heat cycle, you have to not only pay your vet for AI'ing again, but you need to pay stallion owner another collection fee, which is usually around $200.

Depends too, on how much extender they put in it.
