I am just curious as to if I should seperate my mare from the other horses (three geldings - one mare) as she get closer to her due date. They all get along fine and seem to have bonded with her even though she has only been here two weeks. They are all in a pasture with open access to the barn whenever they want.

I am expecting a baby soon(i hope...won't find out if she is preggy until tuesday)but, i have her seperated from the 2 other geldings that are pastured with her! I have heard that it is good to get them used to the spot that they are gonna foal like a month in advance, I put my mare in the foaling stall at night then i put her out during the day with the others. Just enough for her to get used to it before the due date.

It is a good idea to section off the mare during the last month. THere are horses that will attack momma during labor, and cause complications with the delivery. Not saying your horses will, but the mare will be distressed for a while, so anything can happen.

Ok-I have decided to compromise. I am letting her stay out with the other horses during the day and putting her in the barn at night. For some reason my Arab gelding has taken a real liking to her and gets between her and the other horses. When I look out in the pasture, he is always laying or standing right beside her. Strange, but I'm not going to complain. I'm just glad they all get along.
