O.K. my mare has developed a minor case of arthrits so I have decided to breed her this year, so I can have a baby out of her before it gets worse. Anyways beside the point...lol..

The stud I am interested in is my mom's friend's horse, he breeds paints and qh. I am breeding my tb mare to the qh. he is blood bay, 17.2 hh, and my mare is 16.2 hh, chestnut. The stud has an extremely minor roman nose. Can barely tell. But my mare has a really really long head, i mean seriously. She has Damascus in her blood that's why..lol.

So would the baby have a chance of having a long head. The stallion has a small head, and through all his foals he's produced none of then inherited the roman nose. So would the baby have a long head, since the father has a smaller one??

Thanks Sorry some of it is kinda blabbing on...lol

I'm really not sure if the foal will have a long head or not. I think it might be one of those wait and see kind of situations but again I'm not sure.
I did want to reply though b/c although its not what you posted about thats awesome that your horse goes back to Damascus. I have an appendix QH mare that we are selling as a broodmare that is 3/4 thoroughbred and goes back to Raise Your Glass/Raise A Native and Tom Fool. I love all those old thoroughbred champs!!!!

Our Pinto mare has a head when viewed from the side I think is quite straight and unattractive. When we breed her we are careful to breed her to stallions with lovely refined heads with really big eyes and short shapely ears.
We check out as many of the mares that were bred to the stallion we are considering, looking for mares that possibly have a head that looks similar to what our mare has. If the foals heads have enough refinement to make the heads attractive I do not worry about the size of them as long as they fit the body!

I would want to see the heads of the mares that were bred to this stallion first! It could be that the mares were the ones that improved the heads of this stallions get.

I'm in major agreement with Super_Trooper.

Haha, once in a while, though, some people... tend to get bored of what they look at all the time and it gets ugly to them.

Does this stallion have foals on the ground? If so ask for photos of his offspring and see if he tends to throw a certain head type on a foal, take that in consideration. Does your mare have foals on the ground? If so, take in consideration what type of head she throws to her offspring.

Also, as a breeder I breed to perfect the breed I am breeding. I will not breed ANY horse that does not fit my standards I must have the total package before I will breed -- conformation and disposition are number one. Then I move on to -- bloodlines, color, show records, etc.

Breed a horse with an "ugly head" and expect an ugly head (though you could get a gorgeous head you didn't expect, always expect the worse). Breed for what you want in a horse, do not breed because it's what convenient and don't breed for sentimental reasons only. If this stallion or your mare is not what you desire simply do not breed them. Possibly find a more proven stallion who throws more of what you are looking for.

Don't be barn blind -- be aware of each horse's flaw ... rule out the positives and negatives and go from there.

Roman nose is a strong genetic trait, and is passed down very often. If you are breeding for an appendix foal, be careful. If a foal has a strong roman nose, AQHA may not register it. It is considered a serious inherited conformation fault.

O.k I decided today that I don't want to take any chances of breeding a not so attractive foal into this world with defaults like an unproportional head....so I decided i am having this guys semen sent to me...

The stud fee is $1100, and booking is $400!! but my friend bred her mare to him 2 years ago, and she had an awsome baby, and I saw the video she had of him, and I almost fainted when i saw his movement...what does everybody think??

i am gonna call them in the morning:-)

Not really my type, wouldn't be what I would look for in a stud, but that's me.... I like daintier heads, and shorter backs, and his coloring ain't the best in the world, but he moves okay.

Just a quick Q...the first stud you were gonna breed her to...is a 17.2h QH? Never heard of one that big before....

What is this gray stud you're looking at? Breed, etc? He looks nice from the pics...cute jumper even though he's meant to be dressage...that's always a plus...expensive fee depending what he's done though.

What are you going to do with the foal? Yeesh..buy one of ours the foals seem to mulitply for some reason...

haha i know ...lol..i put this post up before i really thought she was preggy...the vet is coming out tommorow to do a palpation on her...I will know tommorow everyone...but after the foal is born (which if there is one, lol) then i will breed her on foal heat, well I have already sent for the semen and it will be here soon at my vet's! The foals he has thrown are usually grey, there has also been a jet black, blue roan, chestnut, and a roase grey...the rose grey was my friend's and the movement is TO DIE FOR...as for the statement of his color, i could care less...are you breeding to him...lol...I admit he isn't the most beautiful grey, but he is gorgeous to me, and his babies are on FIRE...!!!LOL

Cooltime,

Everyone in this world will have arguements. You stated your opinion and I thought that it was fairly accurate. I like his movement. Not everything you say is wrong. People on this form know what they are talking about when it comes to horses. People can have bad days. If you think that someone might come and jump on you for what you said than dont post it. Everyone has arguements and some will agree and some will disagree. It doesnt make anyone a bad person. Both of you were entitled to give an opinion, but none of you were entitled to call ones opinions stupid. That is just the way I see it and I am sure that someone will disagree with me.

Thanks Jesse,I really appreciate the defense, because I did clearly state that it was my OPINION! I breed horses, and I show and train, his coloring is not something I desire in my horses, and I like grays.... his color is poor, but his movement is good... his head could be daintier and his back shorter, but his overall conformation is fine... I just really got turned off by his color... but that's not saying anything bad about the horse, his color and be UGLY and he can still be a good horse!

Okay, I'm just going to ask a question.

When you found out that April had arthritis, you stated that you could not afford to keep her and another horse for showing. But yet now, you can afford to go through with this foal, raise it, breed her, and raise another? That just does not make sense? Am I missing something?

And for future reference, name calling will not be tolerated on here.
