Myself and my wife recently bought a registered paint mare from a local sheriff dept that siezed her during a pot bust in northern california. We have had her for almost a month now. We believe she might be pregnant. I know nothing about foaling. What are the signs of a mare being pregnant? What kind of care does she need if she is pregnant? Help I cant get a vet out to my house for almost 2 weeks? Help!!!!!!

Is that going to be a good thing or a bad thing? Are you prepared for a little one?

Call a large animal Vet and have him/her check the mare for you. If she is in foal you will need the mare checked and most likely she will also be given shots. You can then ask the Vet your questions and also discuss what you will need to have on hand and do should the mare be in foal. If she is not in foal you still will have had your mare checked out by a Vet and have introduced yourself to your Vet!

Definitly contact a vet. You need to make sure the mare is healthy, the foal is healthy, and the vet can approximate when she will deliver. Plus give you a crash course in foaling if you want it. The signs, what you need to do (nothing), what the horse will do (everything).
Basically, you watch for the croup to become jello-like in feel. It will be spongy to the touch...very weird feeling.
Watch for wax on the teats and when milk is streaming, by morning, you just might have a foal on the ground.
Most all mares have no complications. That foal WILL come out one way or another. Just pray that it comes out in the correct position. Reason 1 for a vet check...to make sure the foal is sitting in the right position NOW.

norcalauto, since you have said you cannot get a vet out for 2 weeks, that is why I request photos. If you have a pic of when you first got her and of her now...we can go from there. I think you have an immediate need for information if she is pregnant and don't know when she is due and if its impossible to get a vet out. She could have it before your vet can get there and it may be necessary to get a few things now and get some quick info...What is your level of experience with horses in general?

I know these horses pretty well... and my husband works there so delt with them daily trying to bring up their condition. There were at least two studs running in there and most likely three (Leo SR. I think was in there for a while also) and you most definately need to assume your mare had been bred.. with most of them fairly close to due time! I could probably give you more information on your particular mare if I saw her pic.. (i'll try the link you've posted after I reply here) PM me if you would like to chat more..
*** I just looked at your photo of her... I know her well *laughing* actually almost brought her home myself! What a small world. She is a sweet mare, she is pretty pregnant, she is one of the mares that was expected to foal fairly soon... I wish I could tell you when she was bred, but the previous owners had the mares and stallions together on the lot for so long, that I just don't know. I can probably get more information on her for you however, i'll talk to a couple of friends. Again, feel free to PM me

she is a very sweet mare... The vet will be here in about 2 hours and ill know everything. I trimmed her feet gave her a bath. She also yesterday spent about 3 houirs with a trainer. He said she seemed broke but to have the vet check her first before riding her. she will take a bit and a saddle with no problem. The trainer said he estimates her about 10 months pregnant. last night she was following me everywhere i went and tried to jump up on my porch after me....If you have any other info that would be great. What can you tell me about the stallions she was with?...

norcalauto, just wanted to see what you found out, I backed out of the conversation when Jubillee Farm came to the rescue. <smile> Nice to see that someone actually knows the mare and the situation. Thanx for stepping in JF. Good luck and keep us posted.
