Okay, someone told us about this......Im not usre if it works or not but give it a try.
Stand behind your mare......is she higher(in the belly) on the right or left side? If she is higher on the right side......she's carrying a filly and if she is higher ont he left......she's carrying a colt.
We did this w/ our mares and if this "method" works.....we will have 1 colt and 2 fillies. It will be interesting to see how true this is!

--------------------
Mares:
Honey-buckskin(in-foal to a smutty buckskin stallion)
BG-palomino/dunalino(foaled a beautiful filly)
Dibby-dun(in-foal to a palomino stallion)
Star Bucks-buttermilk buckskin(not bred, we may just use her as a riding horse)

Fillies:
Lizzy-grulla(will be used as a broodmare in the future, due to an injury as a weanling...we are unsure if she will be riding sound, although she might be, as her injury has healed so well...you can't even tell)
Sheba-black(hopefully will be shown in Halter classes starting this year)
Blue-blue roan(we aren't too sure what we are going to do with this filly yet....but she is a cutie)

Geldings:
Poco-sorrel/overo*Paint*(Awesome riding horse!)
Brandy-*FOR SALE*(Nice 2 yr old, going into training soon, price will go up, feel free to ask me about him..if you are interested)

Foals:
Tinker Bell- Red dun filly. Nice short neck, long legs, beautiful eyes..absolutely beautiful. Very people friendly.

Other 2 foals are expecting between May and June.

Thats the way it is for cattle too. In humans, if you carry low its a boy, and if you carry high its a girl! Im sure it can be wrong sometimes though! [Smile]

whether a horse carries higher on the left or right depends on which "horn" of the uterus the foetus implanted in (usually dependant on which ovary the fertilised egg was ovulated from.
It doesnt give any indication of the gender of the foal in real terms, if it works its a fluke.

I've heard simmilar things said about human pregnacies whether its true or not - its probably pretty doubtful. But hey! It would be interesting just to see [Big Grin] all the same.
Lou is right though it really all boils down to how it was implanted at conception.

Maybe some of you think it is a "fluke", but hey its okay to have fun with it! Ooh, Cyn....maybe a colt? Lol, [Smile] . Well...w/ humans it has worked......when a friend of ours was pregnant she carried low....sure enough she had a boy.
Just a little fun, contest, judging, type of thing that I thought alot of you might enjoy!

When the mare is "even" it means that the foal has moved into position, but not all the way there yet. When the mare goes "slab sided" meaning that you can hardly see her sides at all while standing behind her then it just about show time.

Also, take a shiny nail ( NOT galanized) and hang it from a tail hair over the mares croup. Hold it VERY still. If it swings in a straight line, then its colt if it goes in circles then its a filly. Thats proven to work 87% of the time. Mine said colt and thats what I got.

In humans I heard it was if you look at a woman from the back and can tell she is pregnant (she has no waist) its girl if she looks like normal from the back ( she has a waist)its a boy. Though I dont think it works lol I know it didnt work with mine!

I just joined the horse forum because I loved reading all your postings. I have a quarter horse mare who is due April 20th. I went out to check her from behind (what the heck) and if this is true, she will have a filly. I also noticed her udders are full for the first time today. This is my first experience with a pregnant mare so wish me luck.

luvmyhorses: Her udder is full? Hmm...April 20th......thats her average due date, im guessing? If you can tell me her last breeding date, I can tell you her early, average and full term due dates. When did she start to bag up? Usually mares start to bag up 4-6 weeks brfore they foal. Has the foal dropped?(If you can tell) Any white crystal like things around her teats?
Sorry to throw all of these questions at you! I guess Im just a little cuious, [Smile] .

Horse_crazy,

I'm not sure when she was bred. I bought her at an auction because I fell in love with her personality and looks. I had actually gone to find a horse for my husband to ride and came back with a pregnant mare who has never been ridden. Oh well - she is doing great with the ground work and I have climbed on her bareback a few times. Today is the first day I noticed any fullness. I have been checking her daily. Nothing from the teats yet either. She still has the "lump" out to the right side so I am assuming she hasn't dropped yet. I was told her due date is the 20th when I bought her.

Does this mean she's preggy?? I bought her last summer, and I can't get a vet out until tommorow, to see if she is preggy!!!Yay! I hope she is

tbluver,
From the picture, it doesnt look liek your mare has started to bag up.( If she is indeed pregnant). Usually, mares will start to bag up 4-6 weeks before they foal. Then once they get closer to foaling they will have the crystals. And then they will have wax. That is a sure sign that you will have a foal pretty soon. Good luck with the vet, let us know what happens.

tbluver that white stuff on her nipples could just be an acumulation of dirt and sweat etc... Mares need to have thier teats cleaned, just like geldings/stallions need to have their sheaths cleaned.
