Ok guys, I want to breed my Morgan mare Jackie in about 2 years. I'm one of the biggest advocates for not breeding unwanted animals so I feel I should say this. I plan on keeping this foal for it's whole life. My mare has a wonderful temperment, good bloodlines and nice conformation. Unfortunatly I don't have a pic of her but she is slightly over at the knee and overall built a little too lightly for an old type morgan which is what I'm going for. I found some stallions and would just like your opinions here they are. I realize that there is more to finding a stallion but what do you guys think of these horses. Please feel free to post any pics of morgan stallions that you like too.
I swear that I wasn't only looking for black horses it just turned out that way.

I know absolutley positively nothing about morgans, but I personally like the last picture and the first one the best. I think they are both very elegant looking!!!! [ March 01, 2004, 05:19 PM: Message edited by: horse_nut83 ]

I LOVE Morgans...I had one when I was younger. I like the 3rd one (I forgot to look at his name.) I had been planning on eventually breeding Shakira to a Morgan but I'm not going to do that now that she's had surgery. (I don't want to risk hurting her...) Anyway, here is the link to the stallion I had my eye on:
Irish Ebony
His sire was a national champion back when I had my Morgan. [ March 01, 2004, 05:25 PM: Message edited by: arasemt ]

I like the first and last horses best too. I'm leaning more towards the first one right now though and I'm not really sure why I like him better than number 3. Just his presence I guess.(In the pic at least)
Irish Ebony was nice too. What is it with these black horses? I guess there is a higher power trying to tell me something. LOL It's a good thing that I love that color huh? Arasmet I'm sorry to hear about your mare. She's in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe later you can breed her?
Thanks for your imput guys!

This is a Morgan Stallion that a client of mine has in training with me. He comes from the Whipperwill (sp?) bloodlines and has shown nice talent for dressage and even over fences. She also drives him.... http://www.spindletopfarms.com/monte.htm
This is the first year she is opening him up to the public and her intro fee is $500 which includes a $250 booking. [ March 02, 2004, 08:27 AM: Message edited by: SpindleTop ]

Thanks for the input everyone Spindletop that looks like a very nice sport horse morgan but I'm looking for more of an old type. Maybe this would help everyone. The below pic is the ideal for the breed.
THanks again everyone. Keep em coming

Have you checked out the University of Vermont's Morgan Stallions? UVM Morgan Stallions
They have excellent bloodlines and beautiful Morgan stallions. I am sure they would be able to help you choose a stallion that would nick well with your mare and produce just the foal you want. Why not email them and request more information and conformation photos of their stallions. They will send you an information packet that you can look over. Here are 3 of my favorites!:
UVM Tennyson (Equinox Benn Adam x UVM Heidi)
UVM Lash (UVM Flash x UVM Kathy)
UVM LASH is the Farm's present day Justin Morgan look-alike!
Otterbrook Xenophon (Drumlin Super Speed x Otterbrook Piaffe) Xeno carries the famous blood of the U.S. Government's "Trophy" line.

I have a morgan but she is more of the new sport type. As far as classic goes I like the first one you have posted (cal midnight enchanter) His conformation in the link that you provided is absoluetely gorgeous. I would even consider breeding my mare to him in a few years. ![[Pony]](graemlins/pony.gif)

Thanks for everyones comments! Sandra-A1 I have been to the UVM's website but I really wasn't thrilled with anything that I saw. But now that I look again UVM Tennyson might be what I'm looking for I would have to see a conformation picture first though. Morgan21 I was wondering if you got your name from the Morgan breed or if it was your own name. LOL I guess I know now. Good luck if you do breed your mare in the future. I'm not planing on breeding for another year or two but I'll post pictures of the foal when I do. Thanks again everyone!!!

Actually Sandra I was looking for a horse that has absolutely NO color in his background. In my own opinion I think it's really "funny" how Morgans never accepted color horses until a little while ago. I did some research with my mare's bloodlines. I wanted to trace her back to Justin Morgan and I didn't find any colored horses used to start the breed(only a gray or two). I'm also very lucky to work with a man who is 93 years old and has worked with the breed his whole life and he says that it's only been recent that there are colored Morgans. Which means that there has been some infusion of outside blood somewhere along the line. Now I don't know if this is true but I would rather not take the chance. It's a shame too because I really like the conformation of some of those colored horses and their color is pretty. So maybe someday I'll buy a nice palomino stock horse. Hmmmmmm... Thanks for talking. Not many other people I know have Morgans and I'm really enjoying this chance to talk about them.

Have you done a search for Lippitt Morgans? You might find what your looking for there...I hope you find exactly what your looking for...here is wishing you a SUPER foal when the time comes!
I think the genes for other colors were always there only that they were not acceptable at one time, so people culled the Morgans and foals that were other colors. Now that more and more people have entered the breed and like the other colors and are breeding for them you are seeing a larger varity of colors within the breed. This would be an interesting question to send to the UVM Morgan Horse Program and ask them about! If anyone knows the color genetics of the breed they would! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ March 04, 2004, 03:56 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

To answer your question. Yes I have looked up a lot of Lippit's. I've done almost a year's worth of research already. These three horses were my favorites of that research. As to asking the UVM that question I don't really know if you would get an honest answer. Because they are so closely affiliated with the Morgan Horse Association (who IMHO I think is jumping on the band wagon of the pretty colored horses, they want the Morgan to be marketable and right now any colored horse is very marketable) I already did the research all the way back to Justin Morgan and I didn't see any colored horses along the way. Just your average, browns, bays and blacks, with the I think one but I will say two gray horses(I can't remember). So no the genes weren't there or else they would have showed up. Here's a somewhat interesting story for you. Remember that 93 year old friend of mine that I mentioned before? Well he actually used to be on the Morgan Horse Board. (I can't remember the official name but he was one of the people that decided on the rules for the breed) Up until he was on the board the stud book was open. Meaning as I'm sure you probably know, that outside horses were allowed to breed in and the resulting foal could be registered as a Morgan if it was only technically half Morgan. When he came on the board he motioned that the breed had then had a large enough herd base that it could survive if the stud book was closed. Therefore meaning that the only time a Morgan could be registered a Morgan is if both parents were already registered. Up until the stud book was closed there were no colored horses being breed. So there were no colored horses being born. (Without mentioning any names...)It wasn't until after the stud books were closed that a woman was caught breeding a colored Standardbreed and trying to get away with registering it as a Morgan. Said woman had lots of money and had riged it so that the Standardbred used had the same blood type as the Morgan mare(who it turns out was dead) she said was the foals mother. The association not having the money to go to court had to accept this foal as Morgan. It turns out that this colt grew up to become a very influential stallion. Making many colored babies. I don't really think that anyone else will tell you this story. Many people involved with the breed don't care to do the research(or can't find reliable information) and are thrilled that now the breed accepts colored (more marketable horses) I really trust this friends opinion. He's done the research himself about a 100 times. He's actually doing research right now. He's trying to calculate the percentage of Justin Morgan blood that each horse in the breed registry has today. It's pretty interesting. The long and short of it is. That only money and politics matter. Sandra thank you so much for talking I hope you didn't mind my story. I could probably publish it. LOL I'm just throwing out info. I don't look down my nose at anyone with a colored morgan. I just want this foal to be old type and I consider uncolored horses old type. Thank you for wishing me luck with the foal. I'm nervous already and she's not even bred yet. What am I going to do? LOL

Hey, no problem...I find "insider" information like that interesting...and every breed has it's own stories as well as legends and history!
So you want only blacks and bays...right? What about greys? Do you have any particular bloodlines you are interested in or rather stay away from? Also within how many generations do you care a particular horse to be? Some people like to keep it within the first 3 others 5 generations. Are you interested in Futurities, showing, any specific class or event?

Glad you enjoyed my little novel. lol OK. bloodlines...I'm not really looking for any particular bloodlines. I tend to like the Waeseka bloodlines or Dyberry but want nothing to do with Jubilee bloodlines because that is where most colored Morgans get their color. My number one important factor is temperment as that I want to keep the foal for it's life. I plan on finding this out when I start visiting farms. Which makes me rather the stallion to be somewhat close by. With in a days drive from northeaster PA. (But this insn't terribly important) Secondly I'm looking for a horse with really nice conformation and whose foals look as much like him as possible. This is why I'm not as interested in bloodlines because if his own confo is nice and he passes it along, his great grandsire doesn't really matter to me. As for show records I probably won't even look at them. I don't show much myself (I've been riding for 19 years but I've never been able to get over nerves. Geez you think that I would be able to. ) I also think that if i have a baby with nice confo and temperment then I've got the building blocks for a show horse if I should get over the nerves. LOL I think I've said anything I'll try to think of more...

That Palomino is also gorgeous, just a little finely built in my preference of a Morgan. The ones Sandra-A1 posted are also beautiful beautiful creatures. Good luck!
