Yesterday I heard some one claim that he bred his Arabian with his Shetland. I know this mans horses and the arabain is about 15.4hh and the shetland about, ummm... maybe 13.1hh. I wasnt sure if this was possible. Is it?

Yes, it is completely possible. I know of a 16 hand quarter horse mare who was bred with a 12 hand donkey. To breed the mare they stood her down in a ditch and let the donkey stand on the bank behind her. lol ![[Blushing]](graemlins/blush.gif)

Also - my 14 hand grade mare of Arabian type (passed away now) was bred to a 17.2 hand Hanoverian stallion. This was before I bought her and not a choice I would have made, but they did it.

The Fallabella (miniatures) breed was creat by breeding a shetland and a thoroughbred, so no it's really not impossible. Funny to watch though I think. Jumpers- thats funny about the donkey and the ditch ![[Hah]](graemlins/hah.gif)

There's a sort of "pit" at a barn I used to go to that they bred in. Their stud was pretty short (14 hands maybe?) and was regularly bred to mares 16-17 hands.

A friend of mine breeds mini's and one year she had a 14 hand pony come for breeding - they built the little man a stool! Watching him climb up it *with the gleam in his eye* was the funnies thing ever!!!

Alot of breeding is now being done by AI so it doesn't matter if the stallion is much smaller than the mare.

I bred my pony 10hh to a mini three years ago. I did the ditch thing. It works well as long as your mare stands.

i kno this isnt about taller and shorter but the other day this gelding at the farm tryed to mount Honey over the fence. She backed her butt up to the fence and popped it up like three times then just "gave up i guess". I was like..o wow..thats um..cool?
But I was lookin at foals and this 12hh shetland(stally) was bred to a 16.1 hh hanoverian...not through AI..It kinda makes you wonder what the lil guys (or just guys!) are thinkin!?! hmm...

They can be up to 11.2 hands, but she said she wasn't sure on the height anyway.

i think that you will find that the shetland breed society will NOT register shetlands as pure bred over 40 inches... TRUST me i own 3!!!!

Over here, they can be registered up to 46 inches. The post starter is from here, so I'd be pretty sure that the shetland she is referring to was probably from over here. Regardless, she said she didn't know the height and was guessing.

i agree with showjumper. shetlands do not exceed 10hh so it is impossible to be anything over 10hh unless it is only part shetland. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

According to the Shetland Pony Studbook Society (Scotland) they can be registered up to 42 inches for a mature pony.
The American Shetland Pony Club says in America Shetlands can be registered up to 46 inches

How FASLE!! Genetics don't give two rips about what humans decide is registerable or not. I don't care what country you live in - purebred Shetlands can in fact be taller than 10 hands. Just because they cannot be registered does not mean they can't be taller (and purebred)!!!
