For those forum members who ask if a mare is too old to breed....here is a live cam shot of a purebred Arabian mare who is 25 years old and her latest foal. I don't know the sex yet but it is a lovely chestnut like it's mother! Naturally I missed the foaling....darn slow check out line at the grocery store!

I never doubted it! I heard that horses in the wild have an average life span of over 30 years......it is our domestication and hard lifestyles that lead us to believe that 25 is dead in horse years!
We have a 24 year old 1/4 horse at home, acts, looks and feels 8!

Shell..that's not my cam, mare or filly....sure wish it was though! I had been checking it and meant to look in this morning, but had so many errands to run that I never turned the computer on. When I finally did get home, got things put away and did turn the computer on I saw that the mare had already had her foal and I missed it...just my luck! ...... ![[Wink]](wink.gif) [ February 18, 2004, 01:41 PM: Message edited by: Sandra-A1 ]

Very cute! Love the white on his head, . Our *going on* 24 year old mare is due in June of this year! This will be her last foal, I cant wait to see it!
-------------------- Mares: Honey-buckskin(in-foal to a smutty buckskin stallion) BG-palomino/dunalino(foaled a beautiful filly) Dibby-dun(in-foal to a palomino stallion) Star Bucks-buttermilk buckskin(not bred, we may just use her as a riding horse)
Fillies: Lizzy-grulla(will be used as a broodmare in the future, due to an injury as a weanling...we are unsure if she will be riding sound, although she might be, as her injury has healed so well...you can't even tell) Sheba-black(hopefully will be shown in Halter classes starting this year) Blue-blue roan(we aren't too sure what we are going to do with this filly yet....but she is a cutie)
Geldings: Poco-sorrel/overo*Paint*(Awesome riding horse!) Brandy-*FOR SALE*(Nice 2 yr old, going into training soon, price will go up, feel free to ask me about him..if you are interested)
Foals: Tinker Bell- Red dun filly. Nice short neck, long legs, beautiful eyes..absolutely beautiful. Very people friendly.
Other 2 foals are expecting between May and June.

That foal is beautiful I want to hug him!
My mare who is going on 26 acts like she's 7 and it gets annoying sometimes.. lol but you can tell her age is getting to her she just ignores it, I just hope she knows when to stop!
A neighbour by my friend had a 23 year old mare who was supposed to give birth.. which she did but both mare and foal were lost because the mare was too old, but of course different horses age faster than other horses. But this foal is definitely a winner!

Miz Khiz: The mare and foal couldnt have been lost because the mare was too old. As I said we have a going on 24 year old mare that had a foal last year (2003) and she foaled just fine. They had to have been lost because of poor nutrition, poor care/lack of care, sickness...or something along those lines. But I dont think that the mare and foal were lost because of the mare's age, alone. Maybe her age along with the fact that maybe she had a low nutrition value, or something like that.

As miz khiz said, horses age differently. Because that mare was too old to foal at 23 doesn't mean that every mare is too old at 23.

The mare and foal were lost because the mare was too old.....were they lost while the mare was giving birth(foaling)?

I know a 22 y/o anglo mare who had her very first foal last year...a first time mare at such an old age..and everything went perfect. Horses are natural mothers..we make much too big a deal out of it all!
