I know this is supposed to be about horses......couldn't resist posting this though. My cow Lily is due any day now. She got "caught" early so she's due now, we usually have our cows calve in April-May, but Lily is that sort of cow, if you know what I mean. She's a pet, and I've been waiting for this baby for what seems like forever...she's been inside for the last week because it's way too cold outside (16 F) for a new baby. She had twins last year. This is her 4th time calving so I'm not worried about trouble, but it's so exciting that we're going to have a new little one around. Calving season is my favorite time of year. My other heifer, Shannon, is due April 8. It will be her first baby, so I am anticipating trouble. (Out of about 10 first timers, we've had to pull 8 of them, lost 4 of the calves and one cow.) Lily's first baby was backwards. Sorry this is cows, not horses, but I won't be able to breed Abbie for a couple more years, so I have to settle for calves.

I don't know what's up with me today. I know I didn't get enough sleep last night, but sheesh. I read your post, and somehow got it in my mind that you had the cow inside your house . I was sitting here like, she must really love that cow.

Congradulations! I too know how special it can be for a "pet" cow to be calving. Best of luck!

Have to go check on her pretty soon, don't know anything yet. The vet preg-checked her and didn't say anything about twins. All he said was,"Man, there's hooves already!" That's how we knew she was early. I don't know how to get pictures up here, but if any body can tell me how, I would be glad to. Dawn, to tell you the truth, I don't think Lily could fit in the house even if my mom would allow it. She's big for a cow, about 1600 lbs. She's a Holstein Hereford cross.....red and white patches with a white face. She has a HUGE belly, guesstimate about4-5 ft wide.

IT'S A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice, big, healthy heifer calf, although still wet. Any name suggestions? She's blood bay color, with a white face and legs, and a splash of white up one hind leg. I think she was born maybe an hour ago, she was already standing up when I saw her. I'm going to go take some pictures.

She's almost a week old now and doing great. I like the name Faith, but it doesn't seem to fit her. I've been calling her Splash, not the most original of names, I know, but it seems to fit her.

I don't have a digital camera or a scanner, so I'm going to have to develop my pictures and get a CD. It's probably going to be a while, but I'll see what I can do.
