How do you all take care of flys whe you have a foal. The fly spray we use says not to use until after so many months of age. (I think last year i cheated...and used some on our colt, and nothing happened...he was a little older though...about 2 months or so.) We just had a filly born(last night),and is their anything safe to use on her, once the flys and mosquitos start coming out? Any opinions/suggestions would be appreciated!
-------------------- Mares: Honey-buckskin(in-foal to a smutty buckskin stallion) BG-palomino/dunalino(foaled a beautiful filly) Dibby-dun(in-foal to a palomino stallion) Star Bucks-buttermilk buckskin(not bred, we may just use her as a riding horse)
Fillies: Lizzy-grulla(will be used as a broodmare in the future, due to an injury as a weanling...we are unsure if she will be riding sound, although she might be, as her injury has healed so well...you can't even tell) Sheba-black(hopefully will be shown in Halter classes starting this year) Blue-blue roan(we aren't too sure what we are going to do with this filly yet....but she is a cutie)
Geldings: Poco-sorrel/overo*Paint*(Awesome riding horse!) Brandy-*FOR SALE*(Nice 2 yr old, going into training soon, price will go up, feel free to ask me about him..if you are interested)
Foals: Tinker Bell- Red dun filly. Nice short neck, long legs, beautiful eyes..absolutely beautiful. Very people friendly.
Other 2 foals are expecting between May and June.

Whenever our mare had her last foal, the flies were terrible!! Since all of the horse fly sprays do warn you not to use them until after the first few monthes with the foals, we simply used human bug repellant products on him. I know that you can get some great fly sprays that are made for hunters and fisherman that I am sure would work fine, or you could always use the regular Avon bug sprays since they are oil based anyway! Hope this helps and congratulations on the new foal!

There are all natural fly sprays on the market I would check into them. Also, keep stall clean, clean, like 2 or 3 times per day. Run a fan to keep the air circulating, makes it harder for the lil biters to fly. Avon Skin So SOft mixed with water is also great stuff. I would avoid spraying mares teats, babies face, but dont' see a problem with it on the foals body/legs.

Thanks! We dont spray around the udder, to avoid it getting ont heir, and the foal suckling, and the foal getting the nasty bug spray in their mouth. We always have fans going in the barn, as you stated to keep the air circulating. We put up those sticky bugs staps, and that traps alot of the flies. Our stalls are cleaned everyday,a nd we put stall deoterizer(spelling?) ont he wet spots. We keep the manure pile all the way in the back of the property to avoid flies and mosquitoes near the horses. The water troughs/buckets are cleaned very often, agan to avoid the bugs,a nd to keep them clean and fresh,w ith cool water. So basically I think that we are doing everythig right, Ill look into the avon skin so soft, maybe that will work on the little filly(and the 2 other foals, once they are born)
lablover511: Thanks, shes really a sweet filly,a nd we have determined that she is a red run. At first we though chestnut,a s she still has a chestnut appearance, but she has a dorsal, so shes red dun!

Well you can get this roll on fly spray for around their eyes and you could squrt some fly spray on a towel then rub it on them with that?

Depending on how bad the flys are and how much the foal is kept in a stall you might also want to consider temporarily screening in the stall. Congrats on the new addition!
