When I bought Timmy the previuos owner had a blanket and hood on him and kept him under lights. When I got him I just kept a blanket on him, no lights. I seem to have messed up his internal clock. He has actually hair up a little more since then and isn't as slick as he should be for this time of year in Texas. Besides grooming, is there any way to get them to shed that extra hair. I have tried different curry brushes, but it doesn't seem to be coming off. He's not a fuzz ball by any means, but my bf's horse that wasn't blanketed at all has a much slicker coat. The vet says I could be showing by the end of July and I want him to look good.

Is he on any suppliments??? I have my guys on Ultimate Finish by Buckeye feeds as a top dressing (1 cup a day) and it makes mine sleek and nice. They had winter turnout blankets on when it got below 20 and have been outside... and NOW they have no blankets and no lights on them... sleek coats!!!

Not sure if others will work, I just know it worked for me last year as a fat suppliment when my guy got back from sugery and his coat was awesome. THEN 2 months ago I bought a bag becasue it says on the bag for top dressing suppliment feed 1 cup a day... so I started, they shed out great and my mare is so slick... my gelding shed out great too.
I got a big 50lb bag for $30 but it did last me with 2 horses over 2 months... I did cheat and in the beginning gave them 1 cup twice daily to get it into their system Has vitamins and minerals in it... Let me go find the link for you!

Do you think it will still help this late in the season?

I think it will... besides it has great stuff in it just because
I bought it at my normal feed supply store that carries Buckeye brand feed... I ran out and need to go get some more.
It is the only suppliment I feed. I start to look at the store and I get overwhelmed... I am one of those people!!

a cheap fat suppliment is.....yes, veggie oil. Mine get it, and are incredibly sleek and dapples everywhere.
2 cups per day per thousand pounds

The actual vitimans and minerals in the oil/suppliment help with the coat condition and help the hair grow healthier. As far as technical terms... no clue without really thinking hard
ANYONE ELSE?

Aqha, did you get a bag? I went friday and got another bag... I had been out for over a week... my horses LOVE it so much. Even with just a cup it mixes in with the food and they plunge right in... the day before, they looked at the grain (pelleted food actually) and looked at me like... mom when are we gonna get that candy stuff....
The next day when I put the ult finish in they went nuts... eating it up like it was rare and hard to find. Needless to say, they are happy once again!

No, can't seem to find it or they are out of it. I think I may just have to do corn oil for now. I'm so worried about him. It's going to start getting very hot next month. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

You know, I wonder if that accident threw his body into shock type situation that won't allow him to shed out. When my gelding got sick, he was thick winter coat in Aug... and he was misserable.
I would say go with corn/veg oil for a while, and if you run across that ult finish you can always feed that also.
how is he doing??? You riding much?

What I think happened is when I bought him the previous owner had him under lights and kept a blanket and hood on him. When we picked him up the owner warned me and said I better keep him under lights or he would hair up. I only kept a good turn-out blanket in him when I got him home, so I think I threw his "body clock" off by not keeping him under lights for ten hours a day. It could be the injury and stress that came with it didn't help matters either. I just don't want him to suffer in the hot Texas summer. How much oil should he get? He's about 15.2 and about 1000 pounds?
He's doing wonderful, I'm so happy with the outcome. I am riding him lightly, just walking and jogging. I'm hoping to enter him in the walk/jog class in August. They are using Equiplox on his hoof to fill in the space under the new hoof growth. The also completely filled in the frog for more support. I couldn't be more happy. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ May 17, 2004, 09:03 AM: Message edited by: AQHA1972 ]
