ive heard people mention before that they put corn oil in their horses feed to get shiny coats, i was wondering if u could just hand feed(well not exactly hand feed) but like mix corn oil with horse treats in a bucket and give it to ur horse.

my horse doesnot like foreign things in her food [Wink]

[Hah] hehehe, thought of handfeeding cornoil, ewww! Feed w/a dose of oil in/on it is how I get veg. oil into Raps. He's not real picky, but it works. [Applaud] Corn oil on feed/treats should be no different.

haha...yes, you can make a "treat"...in a sense...

My trainer found her son (4 yrs old) a few weeks ago in the feed room. He said he was making cookies for one of the lesson horses.

This particular horse gets flax seed in his feed. Well, her son found the seed, mixed in a ton of corn oil, and was spooning out "cookies" when she found him.

Every horse in the barn got a flax cookie that night. [Big Grin]

Corn oil helps the coat and it also helps them gain weight...(oil is very fattening)

We feed our rescue horses corn oil to help fatten them up! I feed it to my horse for his coat, and for him to gain weight. It makes him very shiny!

You can do that, but I prefer feeding Black Oil Sunflower seeds. You get a nice shiney coat and it sure is easier (and a lot less messy) to feed them as a treat by hand that corn oil.... [Big Grin]
With summer almost upon us I worry about Corn Oil going rancid so prefer to stick with things that will not go bad as easily or quickly such as Black Oil Sunflower Seeds or even Farnam's Super 14.

many of the oils will tie up vitamins that your horse needs, try using a good supplement instead, I have been using Dynamite for 12 years and would not change. I is in a bio-available form and chelated. Look for these words when choosing a supplement. If it does not say it then you horse will have to break down the minerals and combine them to be able to use them. I have two stallions, mares and babies and they are in great shape with less grain and have great coats. That is a real test of a supplement.

I agree with roanie. You have to be careful adding one ingrediant at a time. It can disturb the natural balances. My mare gets Ultimate Finish to add oil to her feed. It appears expensive ($35/50#), but not any more than the corn oil when you figure it out. It also is a BALANCED feed, which is very important for overall health.
