Yew these bugz are in my horses ears and I think that is why she is throwing her head so much. The bugs are kind of like nats but they look different ( color and shape ). So what do you think I could do other than put a fly mask on her. Oh and her ears are shaved so it's even worse.

Not sure, we dont usually have that problem. Why dont you want to put a fly mask on her? You can just buy one that has ears, and you wouldnt have to worry about that, no?

If you leave his/he halter on and put a dryer sheet in the top of it then the flies will stay off of his/her face.

hey thanx you guys I guess I'll try a fly mask and I'll put son dryer sheets under it. I don't let my horse out to pasture with a hulter on cause I'm farade that she will get cot in something that get choked. I don't get those fantsy hulters that have those brakable staps for that purpose.

A mask with ears works great, just make sure you get all the bugs out before you put it on, and that there are no gaps in the way the mask fits so no bugs can get in. I put the mask on underneath the halter. Also, a good fly spray like Ultrashield will help your horse not go crazy!!! (I hate bug season!)

I use the ear mite repelant cream. It sooths the sores and evicts the nasty bugs.

Khafona girl, you're not giving those 'fancy halters' a fair shake. First of all they're no more $$ than a decent nylon halter (single ply all nylon not incl.) The leather bands don't chafe like polys do, and the horse is catchable, by others if necessary. Not that there should be a hangup in the pasture, but if it happens, the fact that the crown will break means the horse will not choke. If the crown breaks, your horse is 'naked', which it is now anyhow. I've always had Raps & Shen in breakaway nylon halters. They've gone awol a few times and been catchable, and destroyed their share of crowns; I wouldn't have it any other way. To each own, but sounds like you're talking yourself out of breakaways, on flawed arguments.

Try the fly mask with ears, and fly spray, we use Ulrashied, we have found that it works the best.
We don't keep halters opn any of our horses, other than new horses than come in and they only have a halter on for the first few days...so we are assured that they are okay, and easy to catch. We also will put a halter on mare that is due to foal, if she is protective of her foal...so she is easy to catch, de-worm, ect. I personally wouldnt leave a halter on any other time, its leaves marks on their faces,a nd more importantly, I have heard of too many(foals especially) getting hung up, and ding or injuring themselves.

What I did for Pook was get a roll-on bug "spray". For about a week, everyday I went out and put some in his ears. They're completely bug free! Just don't use too much, just one light strip of in. I don't know if it could cause damage if it dripped down into the ears, but I'm always careful about it. Try a rag with some sprayed on it if you don't have a roll-on.

I don't really care though because if I can catch my horse then what is the point of having a halter on her anyway? I mean I just think it's one more thing to have to pay for when you don't really use it exept for a few times.

Ok I am a bit confused. Someone said they could be Fly larvae? Fly Larvae is maggots which as you can see look nothing like gnats. Unless your horse has an open wound in its ear I do not see why maggots would be in there. Though I do think that the fly mask with ears is a fabulous idea AFTER cleaning the ears out very very well.

Well i have found that fly masks work the best but there are fly wipes and roll on you can put on there ears also, if posible dont clip the ear hair all the way if you are not going to use a fly mask, fold the ear and clip the hair that hangs out.
