Hello everyone [Big Grin]

I remember when I first got my TB mare her hair was nice and short and she was so shiney. Now she is not.
I was wondering if someone could please tell me how to keep my horse's hair short all year round. I have one zilco blue mountain rug I've been putting on her since it has been getting cold (it doesn't have a neck warmer on it). But I was just interested in knowing how some of you keep your horse's hair short.
I hate it when she gets her winter coat because she stays sweaty for so long and then there is the endless shedding when it starts to get warm again!

I hope you can help,
[Smile] Emma [Smile]

My TB gelding always gets an early winter coat. No matter how much he is rugged it still grows through. As I'm in the Northern Territory (Australia) where winter at its lowest is around 14C overnight there is no requirement for him to have it. I end up clipping him at least twice during winter. The only way you can get around having a winter coat grow through is to have your horse stabled with UV light. The reason the winter coat grows through is the horse's body is reactive to the amount of daylight. The shorter days put the horse into 'winter'mode. It may not be economically feasable to stable your horse in UV light to compensate for extended days so the clippers may be the viable option.
