Neither. Judges are supposed to be watching the horse.

The judges that I have talked to don't even notice the polish.

A friend showed saddle seat a few years ago with NO GIRTH! Judge never noticed. They are too busy scanning the horses for movement and such. They dont have time to analize the horses in detail. SOme judges don't even remember the COLOR of the hroses.

Because she could. Her horse had VERY VERY prominant withers, adn she had a cut-back. She said it fit JUST perfect.

She doesn't advise it, she was being a smart a$$ that day.

I just went to a horse show clinic for judges this weekend. BW- if the judge missed that it wasnt a good judge.

The first thing the judge looks at when you enter the arena is the overall picture. He has about 5 seconds to scan you in detail and then move on to the next horse. But if he notices something is wrong he is not going to watch you. He is going to watch the horses and riders that appeared to be together and confident and looks like they put some effort into coming to the show.

If you are talking halter, put clear on. AQHA has now put out a rule that you cant have black polish on their hooves in a halter class since it might cover defects of the horse. If your horse is a different breed check your rule book. Clear is almost always legal.

I would go with clear. It looks much classier.

If a horse has black hooves, I tend to go with the black polish, if the horse has white hooves, I stick with clear. If they are predominantly white hooves (ie two black on front and white hinds) I'd mix depending on the colour of the horse. It is a personal preference and should not detract from the overall picture or ability of your horse whether the hooves are painted or not. I think even nicely oiled hooves (as long as it is neatly applied) can be just as attractive.

I don't know, but she placed. Maybe the judge saw her but didn't say. Don't know. But that is not a very Usual issue for a judge to look for either.

Gotta agree with horse&Pony on this one. A well turned out horse and rider will place over sloppy turn out every time, doesn't matter how the horse goes, because first impressions are a big thing as you enter the ring. Go with clear if you have any doubts, take a sanding block to shine up the hooves first, then apply your clear polish. Make sure you do it in a non windy area on concrete/wash mats. Let your horse stand for awhile and hooves dry before moving him/her. [Wink]
I, too, am surprised that the judge didn't notice a missing peice of epuipment on your friends horse. [Eek!] How'd she place in the class? J/W [Big Grin]

A Judge prefers what the rules he/she is judging under say is required or allowed for that particular show and class! [Wink]

In Halter and In Hand classes you will be safe if you use clear polish. More and more breed associations are changing their rules making it illegal to change the color of a hoof in these classes.
The best thing to do is find out what rules the show you are attending is being Judged under and then read the rule book! If it is a specific breed association then check to see if it is available online if not get a copy!
The breeds who are affiliated with the USEF you can find the rule book online:
USEF Rule Book

The best advise I can give any exhibitor is to take the time and sit down, read and become thoroughly familiar and knowledgable with the rules you are competing under!
I promise you will be more than glad you did! [Wink]

I don't know. She said she placed. I won't see her until July when Summer II starts up, I'll ask her then unless I see her again before that.

Isn't sanding the hooves bad for the feet because it removes the periople?

Yes, it will if you sand too much...most sanding is done just to smooth the hoofs out a bit so the polish will give the hooves a smooth finish and look like patent leather!
There are also many products on the market now that you can apply on the hooves after sanding that will reseal them too. [Wink]

I have a question. You know how after you file your nails (human ones) you use a buffer and buff them and they shine like they have polish on them. Well can you do that to your horse? Or is that bad?

Personally I prefer Clear, but would not a put a horse/pony down for using black if the hoofs are black.

I think that black liquid that some use almost like shinny boot black looks tacky and un-natural.

Hard work like Sandra said pays off in any showing class.

Tip, when bathing(even if it's just mane/tail and legs) don't forget to use a water/scrubbing brush on the outside of the hoof. Give them a dam good scrub, just be careful of the coronet band.

Just before you go in the ring, apply some clear hoof grease(if on sand it will stick, so don't do it then).

I can assure you that an English Judge over here would notice an overal picture of how well the horse/pony is turned out, even in ponies that are Mountain and Moorland - show in natural state doesn't mean dirty LOL

A horse feet would be looked at, but mainly for conformation, so as clean as possible is better than any hoof grease/shine

A horse/pony that is nicely turnout even before close inspection, will catch your eye as it enters the ring.

Weird thing about the girth BW [Big Grin] How did she do her show, withers or not, surely it might of slipped, pretty dangerous I think [Smile]

I know you might be sick of seeing him, but he is a prime example of a turned out pony(Mountain and Moorland), everything is immaculate on him, including his tack and his Rider(Jade)

Also Sam, who is turned out for Showing Classes not shown in natural state, he is plaited up and his tail has been cut, and his feathers taken out.

Khafona,

The decisions to use clear or black also depends on the breed you are showing. Apps and POA's can not use black or anything that will cover the natural color of the hoof. If you decide to use the black, be sure to apply the polish evenly and all the way around the hoof. You should not be able to see where the polish starts and stops. I bring a piece of plywood to the shows for the horses to stand on while I apply the hoof black. This way I don't get grass and dirt on the hoof and always have a clean, dry, level surface to work on.

I agree with Candy, that a well groomed horse or pony will make the good impression. After all, it is a horse beauty pagent. Judges are forming opinions from the very first second they lay eyes on you.

Candygirl- what an adorable/ beautiful grey pony! [Applaud]
FYI Hungarian steppe riders apparently use saddles w/out girths; Raps breeder allegedly used to ride like that til Mr made her stop.
Khafona girl, my horse has striated hooves b/c of his jagged socks, distal spots, so I used clear polish. Gave his feet a nice shine, and black didn't look weird where light should have been.

I personally think turnout is important. I dont think they would notice small details like clear or black hoof polish but defintily a well groomed, turned out horse and a clean rider is bonus!
