What do you think about tying a horse up in it's stall at night before a horse show? I have mixed feelings about it , the good side I see of it is that your horse wouldn't be able to role and get all poopy after you have just given him or her a bath this is, especialy if your horse is white like mine. But then the bad part I see is that your horse would be unbeleiveabley uncomfortable and your horse could end up being stiff in the morning, Well at least I would! So what do you fell about this? Do you think it's unfair or crule?

Please post back and let me know how you feel.

I would just wake up early the next day and bathe her. I would never tie a horse overnight. Especially before a show. If you bathe her the night before, make sure you get some Cowboy Magic Spot Remover. You could also just wash the parts that get dirty. [Wink]

I (would) put a sheet on a clean horse the night before a show, not tie them. I'd hate to think what might happen if a tied horse spooked or slipped etc overnight. At least w/ a sheet on, even if they lay down, the potential spot that needs cleaning wold be minimal.

We use to bath the night before and put a light sheet on them and stall them overnight. We live on the Sundshine Coast and have to take the first ferry in the morning or the late ferry the night before to get to events.

I would never dream of tying a horse up overnight. There are incredible safety issues in that. Especially if the horse is in a box stall. The night before a show makes it an even worse idea from the facts that you mentioned.

I also would never tie a horse up in the stable/stall and leave it all night, an absolute NO NO in my book.(obviously when trailoring, but you can hear if you have trouble)

I also have a very light grey pony, bathed the night before, rugged(blanketed), leg wraps, tail bagged and Like some else suggested Cowboy magic in the morning if necessary. If you give a coat of Showsheene after the bath, you can pretty much brush any problems away in the morning.

I would say to answer your question it is cruel, how will it take a drink, what if it panics, struggles - I dread to think.

Just my honest opinion.

People I know do it all the time. I have my mixed feelings.

Candygirl, the water is right next to them, they can drink, they just can't move around and lay down.

I have seen it done at many rated shows, paints, QH, Arab, etc.... My trainer wanted to do that to my gelding but I said NOPE, he would be fine the next day, told him he gets grouchier when he gets tied overnight.... which was the truth!!! OH wait he is grouchy anytime [Wink] ha ha ha ha ha!

Hey, don't be dissing Spy's twin like that...ROFL [Big Grin]
I, too, have seen it done, *some* app trainers at shows have tied their horses heads up at night, *UP* at night, so the neck muscles are tired for the classes the next day and therefore they will keep thier heads down. IMO, just laziness and lack of proper training on the trainers part. Cheaters, that is what I call that one. Same could be said about tying the hrose up at night so it doesn't get dirty, do you really need that extra hour of sleep in the am?? Get up early and bath, or sheet the horse at night and spot clean in the morning.

I would never in a million years leave my horse tied up all night somewhere, is that what we are talking about?

I would be totally worried about injury issues. Horses are prey animals and need to feel safe, and when they are tired, they cant run from anything.

I don't believe in tying horses up for long periods of time without supervision. I usually wash my horses before the show and lightly rug them (including skinny hood). In order to prevent them (it doesn't always work) I make a small yard from electric tape within my paddock. At this stage I don't have permanent stabling .. yet [Smile]

Personally I don't think tying a horse up over night in his stall is a good idea at all. There's so many things that can go wrong, and for what - keeping them clean. I've heard about people who do this. If someone really wanted to keep their horse clean wouldn't they just buy those slinky things (I don't know what those are called- alot of western people use them - their really colorful). My number one priority to me for my horse, is to make sure he's comfortable. He gets a blanket in the winter and when its cold out. But thats pretty much it - plus he has an in and out so I brush him everyday because he rolls everyday. But thats the way I like things.
